I figured that Burke would have to at least keep one or two veteran players to make the cap floor next season but 4 years is surprisingly long. I think he's a great 3rd line center but on this team he's 1st or 2nd line which outlines why this team is 28th.

Don't mind me for being pissed off. I've gone to all of the games at home this month and have had it with watching the garbage that we've been playing. I want change. You don't change by keeping one of the worst players on the team for the next 4 years.
You change by cycling the bad players out and give new players a shot. It's not like we don't have depth on the farm. Corban Knight could step in an do a comparable job to what Stajan is right now. It's not like Matt is doing an awesome job right now.

As most have said here, cap/term combination isn't really reflective of on ice performance.
I'd like to believe Burke knows what he's doing here. If that holds true, I wonder if Stajan is an indicator of future cap size or character. Stajan has been noted to be a popular guy in the locker room.

Not too happy with the term, dollars are fine. I would have been ok with 3 years at just under 4 per year. 4 years is just too long.

I don't get the hatred for the term. I will be absolutely shocked if Stajan is still a Flame at the end of this contract. The second he gets passed over by enough youngsters he will be shipped out the door.
Until then he acts as a stop gap and a shield for the kids.
Now if there's a NTC or NMC attached to this deal, then I could understand the hatred.

The money is good, length not so much. Would've preferred 3 years but it is what it is.

No-brainer contract in my eyes.
I'd prefer to give him the same money over 3 years, but 4 years is a manageable term.
Stajan is a high-quality, if not very flashy, NHL utility player.
I give this signing 3.5/5 stars. Could have been better, but still a net positive.

Some numbers to chew on...
If he plays this out, he will be a Flame for almost 8 and half seasons.
If he plays 30 of the remaining games this season, and averages 75 games per season during the term of this contract, he'll be at 578 games as a Flame, one more that Joe Nieuwendyk for tenth all time (both Giordano and Glencross are active and ahead of him, so it wouldn't necessarily be 10th at the time).
If he were to play every game from now until the end of the contract, he'll have 609 games as a Flame, which would be more than Macoun but less than Suter for 8th all-time.

Yup, that's exactly what it means, because no player has every been traded, or demoted or anything like that in the whole history of the NHL.

I miss I_H8_CRAWFORD's meltdowns about the former Leafs, what ever happened to that guy?

I see him as disposable. Flames have some good young prospects that should be able to replace him though...

All that and he probably won't play a single playoff game in a Flame uniform.

I'm more curious why this was done now? Why not wait a few months?

Haha love the massive over reactions! You want a lower $/yr you have to give more term. He's still moveable with this deal. Likely in 1-2 years when you have someone younger to replace him, he'll be cheap for a lot of teams but still not UFA and able to bolt at the end of the year.

Why wait? Especially if you're just gonna sign him in the off-season anyways...
