Not a fan of this at all. Stajan was 26 and on pace for 60+pts and Sutter was roasted for it. IMO he has not earned this deal. Hate the term an the cap hit is slightly high. This guy likely is the 4th line C in 2 years

Last year I would have been very pleased with this signing. This year? I don't hate it.

Who knows now where Knight and Colborne will get to, you can't be certain of this. The only way is to develop them and groom them into the type of players Burke is looking for.
Burke likes Colborne's size. He is still young and can still develop physically. If we give up on all 20-25 year old players, we will be in trouble moving forward.

He is still cheaper and better than D Jones.
And as long as there is no NMC goofiness I can live with it.

I think you are drastically undervaluing him if you think he'd be KHL bound, but I agree, things are bad enough right now that we will have to overpay for lesser players. I can't think of a single UFA that would be excited to play here. Come join our rebuild that really truely is just getting started. It's not like we can even sell we'll be a contender in the back 2 years of a 4 year contact. It really is play out the entire contract you sign with us on a crappy re-building team.
So you are going to have to overpay for guys to give them a premium to endure, and you have to find guys who like it here like Stajan. The good news, it's not like we would have used the cap space elsewhere so it doesn't really hurt us in the overpayment department.

Well the term is too long for my liking, but if more of the $$ are in the front end of the deal, he remains tradeable to a low budget team. Kinda meh on this deal overall

He's a third or fourth line centre, you don't pay them $3.125M. Certainly not for 4 years.

Comparable Centres for his cap hit next season:
Martin Hanzal
Dainius Zubrus
Nick Foligno
Derek Stepan
Tomas Kopecky
Boyd Gordon
Joel Ward
Chris Kelly
Jarrett Stoll
Paul Gaustad
All have around 3-3.2 million cap hit, most continuing till their around 34 years old. Seems like it's a pretty reasonable number for Stajan, and term. Some of those players are definitely better than Stajan, some are most definitely worse. It's not a steal of a deal, but it's not a bad contract in any way.

And Detroit would dump that contract in a heartbeat, and might give you something to take it

Weird signing. I guess he will be the measuring stick for our future centers. If they cant beat out Stajan for a spot in the lineup then they don't deserve a spot in the league.

meh I'm ok with it with the floor doing a stupid jump the Flames are going to have to sign free agents if we dump some of the other higher priced guys for draft picks and with no one probably running to join the Flames this will probably end up being just an ok signing.

So the Flames have decided that this rebuild will last at least four years I see. Oh well, time to just sit back and enjoy the ride I guess.

Probably a strong 3rd line centre that has the durability to continue at this level into his early-mid thirties. What do you see in him?
