Oilers actually have a better record without Smid than with him so he isn't missed around here...warrior sure, good guy ya...but expensive and one-dimensional

The fluffy schedule against teams (like the Oilers) in the league basement helped the Oilers post Smid as well.

It's highly debatable whether or not they will get even that with Scrivens, who has not won a game in over a month, and has posted only a 0.901 sp in that span of five games. In that same span of time, Dubnyk has posted a 0.895 sp, and Bryzgalov a 0.891 sp, whilst playing beyond the most porous defense in the NHL by the widest of margins.
I'm pretty sceptical about the merits of this deal for Edmonton. Seems like a lateral move at best, and a downgrade in goal at worst, and all for a fairly hefty price paid.

Scrivens to Oilers
From the beautiful beaches of California to a Siberian-esque labor camp. Though no other team in the nhl would pay him more than the oilers.

Seems to me like the Oilers moved a bunch of furniture around in their house simply to end up with the exact same interior design and layout they had before they started, only the paid a little to have a consulatant come in and move things around.

This is a good move by the Oilers for a change. They got rid of inconsistent goaltender Devan Dubnyk earlier trading him to Nashville for someone that I never even heard of before. Then later on picked up Ben Scrivens who's been playing well this season in Los Angeles. Now, we will find out how good Scrivens really is with Oilers' defense. If he plays the same way he's been playing in LA, then KLowe will definitely take the credit on this trade. If he play like crap the way Dubnyk played this season, then KLowe will tell the media it is a 100% trade by McT. LA actually didn't lose out on this trade. Scrivens is a UFA and might not sign with the Kings after this season and they can finally bring in Martin Jones in the NHL full-time.

and ended up paying a premium price tag for the same furniture (ie paid half of Dubnyk's salary)

They were down 3-1 in the series and won Games 5 and 6 to force Game 7.

Irrelevant. No cap implications, so I don't see why it would even enter the conversation.

I think Schrivens is a big improvement over Dubnyk, but that wont help unless the Oilers improve thier defensive play

Also, it was a desperation move by NJ in a very deep draft.
Finally, Schneider is 7-9 in 22GP and Brodeur is 13-9 in 26GP. Hardly costing a 41 year old, who could very well be on his way out this year, his job. Schneider was brought in as his successor, but I think they overpaid... same with Edmonton and 19 GP Schrivens.
|
Okay. Now I get you.
That's an interesting assessment. I haven't heard too many people who thought the Devils lost that trade, but time will tell.
(Given that Schneider has a .921 save percentage this season, I wouldn't say he's performing too poorly.)

I think he was pretty sheltered behind one of the stronger defensive teams in the league.
Its going to be interesting to see if he gets lit up like this smooth cigarette that I'm lighting up once he see's point black shots from the dead slot and rebound chances left lying.

Improve their defensive play?
They have one NHL capable defenseman signed for next season, in Ference. And he's barely a 2nd pairing guy now.
Shultz is a 5th defenseman. They're going to throw Nurse out to the wolves next season, unless they make some significant signings and trades to fill their backline.

Yup. Any hope of signing a contract next year based on his exceptional goalie stats from this season have gone out the window.
