What kind of flooring? I install and finish hardwood floors.

We'd love HW floors but the price might be too steep- and with a dog now and maybe future children we better stay with laminate I think.
What is a good price for laminate? Any preferred brands?
And what should we be looking at for install costs? We are thinking about doing it ourselves, but if labour isn't too much then we might just have it done.

Try disassembling the spray arms and cleaning everything with a good amount of vinegar.

Just a couple thoughts:
On the light issue: Have you checked the contacts of the light? shut off the power and remove the bulb. Gently pull up on the contacts at the bottom of the hole where the bulb goes. With bulb changes that spring contact at the bottom gets bent down and doesn't make as good of a connection.
fixing holes: I wouldn't use toothpicks to fill the hole, go buy some wooden dowel and drill the hole out to the same size and then glue the dowel in. Worst case the entire casing can be changed, not that big of deal really.

Insert a wooden golf tee with glue. Once the glue has set up cut it flush and then you can start over fresh.

Maybe - but would the rubber have enough time to set up before the water found a way through it? Perhaps that will trap water resulting in bigger issues - rot?
I am out of league here, perhaps somebody else has a tip.

I think you have missing shingles/shakes or something. There should be layers before it ever gets to the wood, the knot should not be an issue.

here is my issue - lately my garage door seems to be opening up every once and a while radomly. i have unplugged the garage door to try and get it to reset itself.
it is also possible that someone is forgetting to close it and then later on we just think it opened.
i am toying with installing a gadget that runs thru my wi-fi and i'll be able to tell on my phone if my door is open or not. i'd like this more for piece of mind. I beleive this gadget is something like $130 at HD

I recently installed a Chamberlain Internet Connectivity Kit in my detached garage. Main reason was peace of mind as I couldn't see the door from the house. So so now I can check it whenever I want and I have alerts set to notify if it's been open longer than 5 minutes.. I've found the ability to open/close the door via the phone app is also great to have so I don't have to exit through the man door. Works great when shoveling snow and you want to close it from the main door.
Beware though, there are two kits. The lesser common one is good for Security+ openers, while the more common one is good for Security+ 2.0. This is the one I got for my slightly old opener. http://www.amazon.com/Chamberlain-CI.../dp/B00C1CF1S6

Possibility - did you get some ice forming along the bottom of the garage door? We had this happen. Thought the door was closed enough, we drove away, and the garage door reopened because the ice caused the safety sensor to trip.
Kind of unnerving knowing that the door was open for the whole day.

I did something similar but actually put it through the garberator to 'break up the puck' as I use an Aeropress. My plumber recommends against it because with or without the garberator, coffee may clump together over time.
I hadn't found any decrease in drainage but his advice was enough to scare me enough to stop.

Does anyone have an air conditioner and have a brand to recommend or to avoid?

Yes, Armstrong, basically a Lennox, they are great and yet to experience a problem. Wife and I love the AC, friends who I've installed for would agree. I also helped out some frigdeys buds and they usually get York for their customers for whatever reason. Let me know if you want a quote.

You need a water softener, we had the same issue and it was the only thing that cured it.

Yeah that part is weird, but I'm 90% sure that's the problem. Reminds me I should check the level in mine, I haven't added salt in at least a year.
