One of the things that helps the Portuguese clubs attract/find hidden gems is their ability to share the ownership of a player's registration with a third party.

Ahh. Could be wrong, but I don't think the FA allows that. (Tevez was the last?)

The FA not FIFA.

Right. I meant English clubs can't recruit/attract players using the same methods Udinese & Porto do-- thus not as beneficial to bring their scouts over.

Okay. I didn't know if you were thinking that as well.

ownership is definitely a big part of it, but it still doesn't account for the lack of success in bringing over South American talent before they become 'big' and aren't available cheaper

English teams have a difficult time getting work visas for South American players that aren't established national team players though.

While this can be an issue for English clubs, there are ways to work around this problem. For example, Arsenal have signed a few Latin American players over the past few years and have chosen to loan them out to lower league Spanish clubs.

It isn't an optimal solution and you'd have to weigh it against the possible benefits. However, clubs like Porto are showing it could be a very promising avenue.

I'm definitely not an expert on the topic, but from what I've read the English laws are much stricter when it comes to handing out work visas then they are in Portugal. The English law will only give out the visa to a non EU member if they are considered more skilled then locals, and international caps are one of the things that get looked at to show that. Portuguese teams are able to bring them over before they've made it to that level yet.

Edit: http://www.thefootballramble.com/blo...britains-clubs

This article explains it better then I did, and suggests it's only UK teams that have this problem.

Thats interesting. And, of course, once they have national team caps they become almost prohibitively expensive for any teams outside of the big clubs.

but also leads to situations where players are told if they go too early they won't get any Caps

a lot of the players who go to have absolutely a low amount of caps than you would think based on talent

Willain has 4
Fernandinho has 5

the shakhtar players seem to be punished the most but also

Hulk has 28 but he didn't get his first cap until he was 24 when Dunga was gone

Luis Gustavo has 16 but wasn't capped until he was at Bayern when he was 24

A lot of that probably has to do with travel distance too. When Brazil play friendlies in SA they usually use South American based players, the same is typically true of European fixtures, especially considering that outside of the Confederations Cup Brazil hasnt played a competitive match in years.

Looks like no Rooney or RvP for the game against Chelsea.

He's taken a ton of stick and probably not all deserved, but how do you trust a manager at a club like United who plays Ashley Young over Shinji

Kagawa is awful on the wing, and defensively. I figured the risk was high, but the kid in the middle was a worthy shot.

Young is just not good enough for a top club though, surely Janusaz in the wing plus Kagawa in the center is better than Young playing

even Zaha over Young if Moyes just has no time for Shinji
