For those of you who still incorrectly think that writing refers only to pen/pencil and paper, the word you're thinking of is handwriting.

This derailment is quite impressive. One of the better ones I've seen in a while.

Anyway I don't know why I get sucked into reading the comments at the bottom of articles. The ones in the CNN article made my head hurt. People are saying that both guns and cell phones are banned from theatres, which is fine. But the way people are speaking makes it sound like both are equal misdemeanours. Seriously... how many people don't bring cell phones into movie theatres? And I would think bringing in a lethal weapon is slightly worse than bringing in what is an annoyance at most?

Ugh...the stupid... it hurts.

Let's try to re-rail this conversation with a Cracked.com article about guns. It's pretty non-partisan, though a bit obvious.

this is starting to sound familiar

Yeah, good luck with that in a theatre full of people who saw precisely what happened.

I don't see what people are freaking out about. Seems like a perfectly reasonable reaction to me...

The wife of the dead guy who threw the popcorn should've shot the guy, and then his wife shoots that lady, so only 1 of them was left standing. that seems more reasonable.

That, I believe, is grounds for shooting the person in charge of popcorn production.

There is no excuse for that. That could seriously hurt your teeth, or scratch up your gums and cause canker sores..

This should be interesting.

Who can say if he feared for his life or not, and it is probably true he was attacked with an unknown item.

I think the Zimmerman case set a precedent with these sort of things, and how the laws are interpreted.

I can see him walking free.

Yeah Florida.

So, in theory, anyone can shoot anyone down there for any reason they see fit, as long as they claim to be threatened somehow. Nice place.

I could also see this guy walking. Shooting an unarmed black kid by a neighbourhood wannabe rent-a-cop is the benchmark that they've set for themselves.

absolutely, If I don't like you, I provoke you into making me feel my life is in danger, and I shoot you.
Then people on the internet laugh at you for attacking a guy with a gun.

How many cut knuckles does the shooting victim have?

How many cuts to the back of the head does the person shooting have?

Can we listen to a 911 dispatch? (Well, we have a lot of witnesses this time, so I guess we can wait for more information)

Or are you just purposely being dense and making analogies and comparisons when there aren't any?

Well it is the same state and the lawyers are already building up the self defence rhetoric with an "unknown object" as part of the "attack". The law only requires that someone fears harm, not that any harm was actually done. So a paper cut from the popcorn bag, or a errant kernel in the eye aren't even necessary. Just the fear of harm.

It really isn't that much of a stretch, based on past precedents, that this person could be found not guilty. The fact remains that an unarmed person died as a result of the trigger happy actions of someone who felt they were in a position of authority. All of this in a state and country that has an unhealthy obsession with firearms. And in a state with a law that protects people who use them at the first sniff of fear.

There are plenty of similarities - are you just selectively ignoring them? Or being dense?

Nobody is ever willing to de-escalate a situation, are they?

Couldn't buddy have just said "Oh sorry, I was just texting my daughter and will put my phone away now." Situation over. Instead he obviously puts up a fit and ends up getting shot.

Yeah, dumb, and the guy should go to jail, but what a dumb situation.

I don't even think he has to be specific about a kernel of corn, it was an unknown object, it could've been a ninja star, for all he knew, or a lawn dart.

and I don't think the agressor(dead party) needs to have any physical cuts on their hands, nor does the victim(live party) need to have any physical harm to them.

Who is going to define what is justifiable for a "I feared for my life" defense, in Florida.

Like I said this will be interesting.
