I think the problem is that they are generally healthy, so then they think that it isn't as serious as it is. If you don't take care of yourself with any illness the chance is always there that the worst can happen.

Is there any proof that H1N1 is killing more people than the typical flu? Do I really have a higher risk of dying this year as opposed to last year?

It's not killing any more people, but it's killing a different demographic. And yes, if you get it, you are at a higher risk of dying this year as opposed to last year.

Look I'm not telling you or others not to get it but there's no way I'm going to line up for a flu shot because of a small handful of deaths. This way I'm not taking a potential shot away from those that feel the flu could be their downfall.

Is there a flu shot shortage?

Then don't, no one is forcing you. I'm just saying that your "I'm a healthy adult" argument is wrong in the case of this strain.

No, just the sudden spike in demand has left distribution scrambling

None. There is a thirty year old in ICU here on a ventilator. No complications, just severe flu symptoms

Then please don't take a hospital bed away from someone who really needs it if/when you get sick because you decided that you don't need the shot when every medical professional is telling you to get one.

Its crazy my mom messaged us on the weekend making sure we had all got our shots as she works in the ICU in Rocky View and said all they have been seeing is flu cases and she has never asked us that before.

I had it when it first came out and a day or so after I could not get out of be for 24 hours but that went away right quick. Kinda glad now because I feel invincible, which is clearly in my head.
I went to my doctor with chest pains a while back, she said I once had a patient that had chest pains and it turned out to be nothing so don't worry about that.

As of last week, not one person hospitalized or dead had recieved the vaccine

It's not just your own health that's affected. One of the dangerous parts of the flu is that you're contagious up to two days before symptoms appear. It's the young healthy people who transport it around.
Unfortunately, the fact there are very few of any people with a memory of what the flu can do, people feel secure when there is risk.
The flu can do this:

Take away vaccinations and the numbers would be similar today

Wife just got back from the clinic at the South Calgary Health Center (31 Sunpark Plaza) and nurses are waiting for patients to fill out the sheet, she was in and out in 20 minutes, where as yesterday I was there for 2hrs. If you live down this way and want to get your shot, might not be a bad time to get in there.

Sorry to spam this thread but here's a neat website. May be in here already, but I didn't see it with a quick search.
http://www.google.org/flutrends/ca/
It only gives a glimpse at flu activity and a quantification. It does not give any insight on severity of illness.

Hopefully people standing in long lines will remind people to get their flu shots earlier next year. I had zero wait time when I did mine months ago.

Same here. I went to get mine just before Christmas and filling out the form took longer than waiting to get the shot.

Does the flu shot I would have received in October or November include H1N1 or are these a separate vaccination?

Yes, H1N1 was included in the vaccination this year so if you got the shot in October you're covered. It's still the same vaccination being given out now - the problem is all the people who waited until peak flu season actually arrived instead of getting it ahead of time when it actually protects you for the whole season.

It was included.
Alberta government dude apparently said we just got the last batch of flu shots IN THE WORLD from Italy. Time to panic people!

I cringe at standing in line, with my 2 year old, to get his shot. Why won't they let us make appointments for kids!?!

A guy I knew growing up (he's now mid-30's) is on a ventilator (respirator?) in the ICU with H1N1. They are not sure yet if he will pull through.
