I'm well aware of what he brings, but Nemisz was barely going to get you a 6th or 7th round pick at this point, and you would likely not find a guy like Westgarth in those rounds, never mind his experience level which is already better than Nemisz's.
Whether you like the return or not, it's still better than a bag of poop which is what most teams would have given for Nemisz at this point in his career. While I'm not a particular fan of loading up on goons or beefy guys, but I understand that we are seriously short of anyone who has decent size on either the NHL or AHL rosters. This is just to add some depth of guys who could play NHL hockey if called upon. I doubt Nemisz will ever see the NHL again, so this is definitely an upgrade IMO.

You would have got nothing of value for Nemisz. If you were lucky another team might take him for "future considerations" relieving you of a contract. Or you might get another troubled prospect back similar to the Negrin/Aliu swap.
Westgarth is also worth more than Nemisz in terms of value. But who cares? The fact that we got Westgarth on sale means nothing since we are probably not going get anything for him.
If we trade McGrattan for something, or if we somehow move Westgarth for something at the deadline than great. I am wrong and we get something for nothing. But chances are we got nothing for nothing and are now carrying two 4 min / night goons on the active roster. As Walker would say "That's Stupid".

Useless trade won by Carolina
Nemisz was not utilized properly in Abbotsford. We basically wasted a 23 year old big forward with some decent upside who was not provided a decent chance to prove himself. Do we really need another tough guy on the farm? We definitely don't want this guy wasting a spot in the Flames line up as we already have too many 30 year olds scoring 1 assist every 10 games and taking up 16 minutes of ice time. This move did nothing for the Flames but may help Carolina.

What are the chances we flip this guy for a pick or prospect at the trade deadline?

I would have been quite happy if we had gotten a draft pick in return. One less player and salary as a cap hit. Sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough with a 6th or 7th round pick - just look at Detroits drafting history.
I like Burke's idea of this team getting bigger and tougher. It would be nice if we could return to the days of the 80's where teams feared playing in the Dome. It's going to take time patience to get us to that point and my fear is Burke is looking for quick fixes.

lol. like 15 games in the nhl and 1 assist. even worse points in the ahl the past 2 seasons… and below average points in his first 2-3 seasons in the AHL. He neve took the "next step"

Still without a GM, this move was done by President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke, and oh my god, Burke, we get it. Truculence. We get it. You like truculence. Kevin Westgarth is truculent. That's great.
This is a low level, near inconsequential move aside from the fact that Westgarth is joining a club that already has Brian McGrattan in the NHL and Lane MacDermid in the minors, so one has to wonder what the point is. Nemisz wasn't an asset, really, so the Flames haven't lost anything in this trade, except perhaps a roster spot for a prospect or young player who may have more to contribute, which might be nice for a rebuilding team.
Instead, the Flames will find a spot for Westgarth, a player who makes the team grittier, which is apparently important.

I'm not sure this "quick fix" is going to do any harm to the team. We traded a bottom 6 AHL player for a 4th line NHL player who can help in the physicality department on a team that has almost none of it. But I agree, it would be nice if we at least made teams think twice about who to dress when they came to Calgary.
BTW, I really hate that example of the Red Wings finding guys in the 6th and 7th rounds that are really worth anything (I assume you mean Datsyuk and Zetterberg). It happened a couple times before everyone caught on and started scouting Europe at the same level they did. It hasn't happened since and will likely never happen again.

He will be taking a roster spot that should be going to one of our players down in Abby. I'd like to see someone like Ferland up here for a cup of coffee to see what he can do.
We already have McGratton and Macdonald, how many more enforcers do we need?

You don't have to go that far. The 05/06 Flames were the team that nobody wanted to play. It wasn't (just) because we had a couple of goons on the fourth line. We had a big bad top 4 D, a number of power forwards that could actually play hockey, and a team that was willing to play harder than the other team every single night.

Lol, I know what you meant, but that was priceless.
If he has to clear waivers I doubt you see any teams jump to grab him. Ferland is still a ways off from proving he deserves an NHL shot. If you had said Knight I would agree.

It was actually a more recent phenomenon that the Flames have stopped being a 'feared' team. The Flames were always a physical team, almost always employed enforcers, and played a pugnacious style involving hitting and fighting. Flames always carried guys that were willing to drop the mitts and stir up some trouble.
However, put Westgarth into the lineup. Who sits?

Never thought of the waiver part but you're probably right.
Maybe my fear of Burke short circuting the rebuild has clouded my judgement. Time will tell.

I think Feaster tried to make the Flames into an eastern conference team. Seemed we got smaller and faster which didn't work out at all. Good thing he is gone.

We got an NHL(ish) player for nothing with no contract commitment beyond this season. So this argument ultimately boils down to whether you like goons or not. Personally I think 4 minute goons don't belong in the game so unless we manage to flip Westgrath or McGrattan for a return than we just got a great deal on something that we don't need. IMO.

Kevin Westgarth may not be a great player but he's played 133 NHL games...something Nemisz will never do.
I suspect Nemisz will be in europe next year and not in the KHL.

Typical garbage trade that has been one of Burke's trading legacies.
Nothing for less than nothing. Woo!
