Or it could be one of these trades where we think, there must be something else coming... and then there isn't...

Wow - I can't believe the reaction to this trade.
First, Nemisz: he has ZERO value. None. He is a 3rd or 4th liner on the Heat and his contract will not be renewed by the Flames at the end of the year.
So if you get anything for him - anything at all - you've done well (and if you get nothing, you're even)
As for hurting the Heat: what? If Westgarth stays on the Flames roster, then someone else goes down. Whoever that is, they will be far better than Nemisz.
As for getting another big player - we need more, IMO. The Canucks came and Oilers have come to town in the last few days and both left with wins and few to no aches and pains.
Westgarth won't help the Flames win, but he can help make it a bit tougher for other teams to come into our barn.
I am shocked that Burke got anything for Nemisz, but when I heard that Carolina had to move a salary, that made sense. The return isn't much, but the price was even less.

People are really overreacting to this trade.
"Oh no, that means one less spot for the kids"
The prospects we call up are not playing on the 4th line anyways. If anything this is a sign that Burke wants to bring up all the young guys from ABB and is constructing a 4th line that will allow him to ice a soft, young line-up without getting the kids destroyed.
I personally like having westgarth, bouma, mcdermid and macgratton on the roster. 3 of those on the 4th line and we wont be messed with. You can argue until you are blue in the face about wether or not having a goon 4th line makes us better, but the point is it makes us less likely to take crap or be pushed around if you can ice a line of 6'5 225 guys who all can fight as well as provide energy. Then you can have 3 offensive lines and call them 1a 1b 1c, without having to worry who will protect / stand up for Gaudreau, Hudler, Cammalleri, Byron and the rest of our midgets / kids. Someone takes a run at one of our players, give the 4th line a tap on the shoulder. Simple. Get used to it with Burke.

They should of held out and demanded at least a first round pick if not then at least on if the Staal's.
Horrible deal, we could have got more. The sky is falling.

I don't mind this one bit.
Adds toughness and gives Nemisz a fresh start.

I'm surprised the Flames got anything for Nemisz. I assumed he would simply not be re-signed after the season was done. Westgarth adds some needed toughness to the team. Might mean Colborne gets press box time.

Ugh. Isn't Burke supposed to be looking for a GM? Why is he making pointless trades?

I was envisioning they would make a couple moves to improve team toughness instead of bringing in another heavy. Granted McGrattan got tagged a couple times in his fights even though he wins a majority of them.
I dont see playing both McGratton and Westgarth on the same line. They will be running around a lot.

Dump puck, chase into corners, bang a few people up, and change.

Excited for the Oilers to call up Steve McIntyre so we have a goon fest 4th line matchup.

People aren't over reacting. Well, actually the people that are accusing others of over reacting are over reacting to those peoples appropriate reaction .....
Nobody is suggesting that the sky is falling or that this is the end of the franchise. We are simply saying that Westgarth is a redundant acquisition with McGrattan on board. Personally I am happy that the organization traded Nemisz. I want to see him get an opportunity with another franchise. But I would prefer getting back another 2-way throwaway contract similar to when we acquired Aliu.

More like: Start in the offensive zone, get chased into the defensive zone and than:
a) Goal against
b) Ice the puck
c) Get a whistle in the d-zone
d) If lucky get back the puck, dump it deep, lose possession, and than change
Watch McGrattan play. Happens like that nearly every time. Turning an O-zone start into a loss of possession or a D-zone start. Drives me nuts. Can't imagine Westgarth will be any different.

Good trade. Really its a pretty insignificant transaction. This Westgarth guy isn't "stealing" a young players spot either. If someone deserves the job more, than that person will get the job.
In the mean time, he adds size and toughness, something we have or had zero of before this trade. Literally no toughness on our defense. Gio is tough, but he is not a big body at all. This will help, but hopefully a bigger and more talented guy will step up or will be brought in at a later date.

I don't really know Westgarth so I can't really comment whether I like the trade or not. I do want to talk about Nemisz though. When he was drafted Flames fans were so excited and we all think he might be a good power forward with playmaking ability. Unfortunately the guy couldn't hack it in the NHL. I've seen him play for Calgary and I thought he is a bit slow skating-wise and reaction time. I don't even think Nemisz is in a Top 10 prospects for the Flames so I think Burkie just gave him a huge favour by trading him to Carolina. Maybe he'll work in Carolina or maybe not. I wish him well and I hope he gets a chance in Carolina.

I don't remember exactly where fans voted him in the summer, prospect-ranking thread, but I am pretty sure it was not in the top 30, (never mind top 10).
He simply doesn't have the foot speed to be effective in any way in the NHL.

29th, just ahead of Ortio.

Probably still living off his 1st round draft position, would have definitely fallen below the likes of Billins if it was redone.
