Not surprised Nemisz was moved - his skating never improved to crack our squad - but westgarth is an interesting pickup because I dont know where he fits in. He isnt going to bump McGratton, we have ferland and McDermott in the minors. Bouma has been playing ok and can kill penalties so I don't see that either.

And it isn't like westgarth can bump jones, galliardi or Colborne out either.

I do recall chatter that some owners were impressed with westgarth during the lockout negotiations.

My only guesses are:
1) we see a promotion for ferland after the Olympics and westgarth takes his spot in Abbotsford; or
2) we have offers on the table or McGratton as current league champ and a toughie who can take a regular shift.
Meh.. I'm sure he could be just as useless as David Jones or Galliardi if needed.

Was Wesgarth coming from the AHL? Burke says the farm also needs to be bigger... If it makes our squad bigger and stronger for a stretch run then great! Let the AHL team have more muscle so the kids can play freely. I'm sure Burke spoke with "Troy g Ward" (hate adding the g hahaha) and the other coaches and they needed more weight down there.

But if it's for the flames... Then who knows what's going on. Maybe the kids will be getting promotions to the big club and more muscle is needed for them?

Maybe they don't want ferland fighting after he comes back from injury?

Obviously Nemisz wasn't showing that he was going to make the jump, but now you are wasting a roster spot on a guy that can't play a regular shift.

Nemisz was effective in his role, instead, both teams (Abby, CGY) get a little worse.

Terrible.
Seriously? God, calm yourself.

This is what I suspected, but was waiting for the input of someone who watches the Heat regularly.

When Burke went down there and proclaimed that his inherited 1st place AHL team needed to get bigger, it rubbed me the wrong way. I'm already getting tired of our President, I'll admit, running his mouth with his one-track minded approach to building a team.

He follows Abbotsford, and this unquestionably lowers their skill level. It seems Burke didn't care all that much.

I doubt Westgarth is capable of upping his game to such lofty heights.

Thymebalm is bang on here - this deal makes both Calgary and Abbotsford worse.

My definition of a horrible deal would be something along the lines of "getting a poor return on a valuable asset". Nemisz was not a valuable asset, therefore anything we could get for him would not be poor.

"Horrible" is a bit of a hyperbole for a guy (Nemisz) who had the last three draft classes ahead of him on the Flames depth chart. The Flames are doing themselves, and him a favor in this trade.

This is hardly a horrible trade lol. It's a scrub for a scrub deal.

This isn't Darryl trying away out only piece for bag of scrubs.

Maybe the Flames are bringing in a prospect to take Nemisz's place in Abbotsford?

I have to suspect that there has been an offer made on McGrattan. Just intuition and nothing more.

I actually like Nemisz.

Was a guy who was never going to be a star but knew how to do all the little things on the ice and created space for linemates.

Still think he could find a niche in the NHL is the right situation.

Nemisz is the 12th leading scorer on the Heat if they can't afford to lose him I doubt they are winning anything this year.

I still held out hope that Nemisz could develop but that was probably just false hope at this point.

I don't see the point of Westgarth with McGrattan here but I guess better him sitting in the PB than Granlund.

Even that makes no sense when MacDermid is waiting in the wings.

Again... Burke has no concern with Abbotsford winning anything. Its nice that they are good... but its no skin off his back if they lose.

And really... is there a ton of difference between this guy and Neimsz in terms of talent? Neimsz had 9 points in 32 games this year in the AHL, in his last season in the AHL Westgarth had 25 points in 76 games. That's a higher PPG for Westgarth than Neimsz has this year.

Gratz better not be going anywhere. He fits his role perfectly and is a fantastic guy in the locker room for our young players. Gratz has more to offer in the locker room than anything he could do on the ice.

Grade A human being.

MacDermid is not a MacGratton/Westgarth type heavyweight fighter.
