One of the smarter guys in hockey apparently. Psychology degree from Princeton.
Funny how he and Parros are both goons with impressive education backgrounds.

married to Bill Cowher's daughter. Wonder if their kids will get Grandpa's chin?
Sounds like Carolina needed to dump a NHL salary for some reason. Head scratcher from our side.

Backlund is the last remaining Sutter first rounder.

Not exactly sure what Westgarth is going to do about it though? He's been utterly useless in Carolina, and he's not better than anyone we have on the roster right now. You might as well just play Breen at forward if this is what Burke wants.

Nemisz was a contract that wasn't going to pan out and the Flames have more young talent coming up next year that they have to make room for in Agostino, Gadreau, Arnold etc. Why not get something for a guy your going to be getting rid of anyways??? To me this trade was made in case Gratts is suspended for a prolonged period (3-5 games) Bring in a fighter who you know can fight and step in to fill that role.
Not a bad trade. Not a good trade. Just a hockey trade.

not particularly surprised.
Nemisz simply wasn't a good enough skater to make it in the big leagues. Unfortunate pick, but it is what it is...
Best of luck to the kid.

I remember this guy for being a face of the NHLPA during the last lockout, and getting a lot of hate on this board for it.

Does anyone have a GIF for 2 dead horses getting beat?
I believe everyone is well aware of both points and no one actually needs to communicate them in writing.

Right. He was heavily involved in the CBA discussions last year, wasn't he? That's why his name is familiar.
Don't really see where he fits with McGrattan on the team, and MacDermid in Abby.

Hmmmmmmm
Interesting.
Not surprised Nemisz was moved - his skating never improved to crack our squad - but westgarth is an interesting pickup because I dont know where he fits in. He isnt going to bump McGratton, we have ferland and McDermott in the minors. Bouma has been playing ok and can kill penalties so I don't see that either.
And it isn't like westgarth can bump jones, galliardi or Colborne out either.
I do recall chatter that some owners were impressed with westgarth during the lockout negotiations.
My only guesses are:
1) we see a promotion for ferland after the Olympics and westgarth takes his spot in Abbotsford; or
2) we have offers on the table or McGratton as current league champ and a toughie who can take a regular shift.

Maybe this is a play to make Westgarth the new GM?

@AAVickers Just got off the phone with #Flames acquisition Kevin Westgarth. He said he'll have no problem bringing some truculence. #Flames
Westgarth: "I think through my career, at the risk of sounding immodest, I like to bring a physical presence and a lot of grit." #Flames
Westgarth (cont): "I think it’s going to be a fantastic hockey move and I look forward to contributing as much as possible to the Flames.”

Oh God. Stop now Burke. If he could avoid tampering with the chemistry down in Abby, they would be just great.
Obviously Nemisz wasn't showing that he was going to make the jump, but now you are wasting a roster spot on a guy that can't play a regular shift.
Nemisz was effective in his role, instead, both teams (Abby, CGY) get a little worse.
Terrible.

Super nice guy off the ice, extremely smart. I feel bad for him, he was happy in Carolina, his wife's family all lives there. I really wanted Nemo to do well here, that leg injury he had really set him back.

Can't argue that the Flames need some size and grit, and this is exactly a type of move that most saw coming - one of the lesser regarded prospects for some size and grit.
I do think the Heat will miss Nemisz though. He was a good leader out there I thought. Still think Nemisz has the potential to eventually become an everyday NHL'er as a 4th line guy. Value isn't bad I guess.
