is your gear grinder people who pay cash or people who pay in exact change?

i always pay cash at the checkout - whether it's a self checkout or one with an employee - and i find i'm usually quicker than people paying electronically (i really don't get why soooo many people struggle with selecting an account, entering "ok" for purchase amount and a pin?)

i will confess that i LOVE getting rid of change at a self checkout, but i ONLY do that when there is at least 1 other self checkout open as i don't want to be 'that guy' holding everyone up

On the note self checkout, it RMFGMG when people go through self checkout with more than $30 worth of stuff. I'm standing here with a jug of milk and a chocolate bar, went to self checkout to try and save time, but here's Mr scared of cashiers slowly scanning and an item per minute speed while a huge line forms.

Except that the trailer blocked over half of their neighbor's driveway, meaning it was rather difficult to get in and out. He should have free access.

Condescending and arrogant. And you look like a tool.
I can't think of many situations where I've heard someone say "guy" to sound cool, but I can think of lots where the intent was to come across condescending. You may be missing the point!

Either that, or the offending party truly is a tool.

What do you suggest?

I mean in a perfect world, I would pay off all my purchases instantly, but it doesn't always work out that way...

A gear grinder for me is the reverse too - when you have a full cart of groceries and the cashiers are bogged down with a line of people that are each buying 2-6 things.

You got only purchase things that you can afford to pay for at that time, live within your means.

Don't buy things on credit cards that you can't afford. Buying a house that will appreciate (hopefully) with a 2.5-4% mortgage can make sense. Buying a disposable product or service that you do not require on credit at 20% doesn't make any sense. If you so choose to get the same product or service, there are much cheaper forms of credit. If you don't have access to these forms of credit, you likely need to adjust your current, and future, spending patterns. Unless it's an emergency, you shouldn't be purchasing anything with a credit card that you won't be able to fully pay off once the bill arrives.

Not instantly; just pay it all off at the end of the month or whenever your credit card statement gives as the "due by" date.

A Savings account at any bank? You're lucky to get 2%.
Apparently you are a 1% here. 99% of CP make >100k/year and carry no CC balance. Unless you are getting great rewards from that card you should go with something with less of an interest rate. Check the CC thread, but I'd suggest looking into Capital One.

Another option is a line of credit. They're not that hard to come by, and you can get them at prime + 1% or so. Transfer your cc balances and pay the LOC off with your cash. It's not the ideal solution, but it's better than paying 20%!

You don't have to be making 100k a year to not rack up credit card debt. Just don't buy things you can't afford.

Some stores have express signs and item limits for self checkout, at others it's just more of an unspoken common courtesy thing

If I'm just picking up a few things at Sobeys the self-checkouts are so quick with the tap to pay cards now. Barely have to slow down.

Love it.

I'm the type of person that cannot stand waiting in lines. So I always try to be as fast as possible when using these machines. I try to be at least halfway to the door before the machine can even say "Thank you for shopping at...."

I wouldn't say maximum or minimum because it will vary from person to person. I have seen some people struggle to get 5 items through and others whip through 20 items. As well as time of day/amount of people in store.

I would say that if you can use the system well 20+ items may be fine but if there is a 6 person line-up probably not the best idea to go in with a loaded cart.

Don't want to put it on old people as I know many get touchy about that but living in Lethbridge it is painful seeing some Seniors who for obvious reasons struggle with technology try to use the self checkout.

I know I could give some folks 3 apples and it would take them 10+ minutes and 3 trips from the attendant to get through the self checkout.

What does it matter what the CC interest rate is? Do people actually carry balances on credit cards?

Of course they do.

Credit Card companies aren't running off the yearly fees of their premium cards.

I would imagine most people that have credit cards have carry a balance or at least have carried a balance for more than one month.
