One of the best sets of Headphones I own, are a set of Shure's that came as a throwaway bonus in a PC Microphone pack I got for $99.

Beats by Dre, are the $129.00 Monster HDMI cables of headphones.

They are so the Monster cables of headphones, they are even made by Monster (edit: were from 2009-2012, they make them themselves now).

If you really want to spend $300 on headphones that actually sound good, just buy PSB M4U 1s.

Fine call them over priced, but to suggest they sound mediocre just makes the person saying it come off as silly. I can't even be bothered to debate that. The hate on for beats here is beyond ridiculous.

You can buy better headphones for $50. And they don't even sound mediocre, that would be too kind.

Just because you dumped $250 on them, isn't going to make them good. 70% of what you pay for Beats, is marketing costs and or licensing fees to Dr Dre. Anyone that is a true audiophile won't even mention them in a 'best headphone' debate.

are we talking about the studios or the smaller ones?

Everyone experiences sound differently. It's entirely subjective. There's nothing silly about us saying they sounded mediocre to us.

It's all about what sounds good to you.

I owned a pair and my experience with them was consistent with (very) common complaints - boomy & loose bass, muddy mids, and weak-feeling construction. Complex rock tracks were borderline unlistenable. QOTSA, NIN, and Tool tracks had no musical separation and weren't much more than a mishmash of noise.

For me, they didn't work, but if the Beats make a sound that pleasing to your ear and suit your musical taste, then rock on!

I got a set of Solo HD Beats for Christmas here, while it was a very thoughtful gift and they seem to be ok for hip hop... I found pretty much the same thing with the artist/genre you mentioned here.

Oddly enough they seem to take a lot of the oomph out of most rock/metal I've tried with them... live tracks? Forget about it. Might as well be listening the iPhones built in speaker. It's mud.

Now, sound quality aside, they do "feel" like a premium product in your hands, soft touch plastic, nice thick cord, some definite attention was paid to the appearance/build of em. But they aren't very well balanced across the EQ.

But like I said, very thoughtful gift and I have no intention of getting rid of them.

Beats are designed to listen to bass dominated, license plate rattling, rap and hip hop tracks that you hear coming out of a 17 year old's rusted out 1994 Nissan 240 SX's with home made tint jobs in the 7-11 parking lot. (I think I covered all the bases there.)

If you listen to music that has anything but overpowering bass in it, they sound terrible. That is what a lot of people don't understand about speakers, and sound in general. Bass is really easy and cheap to make sound decent. It is the upper ranges where the challenge and cost come in.

If this was the case, I wouldn't have to pay out my ass for a bass rig.

I'm pretty sure it's easy to make bass LOUD but it isn't that easy to make it nuanced and articulated.

Don't know how you could argue for the lower end Beats headphones being anything of quality.
Spent $80 for the Solo's and a little bit for the over counter replacement warranty. The first time both supplied cords quickly become worn out and the 2nd time the headband fell apart only to show some cheap foam and two strips of glue for adhesive.

Replaced it again and sold the brand new one.

The high end (beyond the Studios) have quality to them but the price point opens so many doors to quality cans.

I agree its subjective and why such a wide gulf can exist. But what I can't accept is the word mediocre. Maybe its because Im talking about the expensive studios with noise cancellation. I've used a lot of headphones in my life and they're still the best I've ever heard. Maybe there's some really fancy ones I can order from 'Murica for a lot less that sound better or just as good and save me the dough. But the sound of the studios are fantastic. I can accept over priced but not 'mediocre'.

I found Bob Marley's were better sounding when I did my shopping. Even when Directly compared to the studio's. And when it came down to it, the $145 Marley's won out over the $300 Beats.

As for other brands I am very fond of, V-Moda was my go to for years. But they'd die on me every 6 months to a year. A little to breakable for my type I suppose. But by far the best sound I've had in ear phones.
