The fact that Jones' contract is the same as Hudler's drives me nuts.

I don't get this. As C4L alluded to earlier, Moss' biggest problem was staying healthy. He played hard every shift, went to the dirty areas, and was great defensively. There's a reason every line he was put on found success, including when he was on the 4th line which subsequently became our biggest scoring threat for a time with the likes of Jackman and Kostopolous.

Yeah, but Flames are supposed to leverage taking on bad contracts to add value.
Now if one considers getting rid of a pouting Tanguay the kind of value taking on a bad contract should bring.... fair enough. But as I see it we added salary and two inferior players.
Yes - I think this was one of the trades Burke was referring to when he talked about bad return for the asset.

Didn't see the game. Did Glencross get hurt?
or is it a typo for his TOI?

Million IIRC tweeted that Glencross left the arena in crutches and a walking boot.

Yeah, be basically turned his knee into a pretzel when his skate picked in the ice as he was twisting down after a hit. Wouldn't shocked if it was a couple months.

All of these single goal losses certainly aren't a huge negative for a club in the first year of a rebuild. I do not condone losing whatsoever and always cheer for a W but these close losses to good teams really are the best case scenario for us. Especially to teams like Pittsburgh and Boston, who act as a measuring stick for the Flames.
They give the young guys on the team confidence that we can play with elite teams when we consistently work hard and also indicates we aren't as bad as our record shows (which is a nice bonus come draft lottery time.)
Hopefully all of the 3rd period collapses this season acts as a lesson for the kids going forward as well.

Flames played a very good game. Fun to watch for sure and quite proud of the effort the boys put in today.
Re Monahan, he has seemed in over his head the last couple of games. Especially this game. He just wasn't able to keep up with the speed of the game and the plays. Injury? Maybe, or maybe he just needs to get up to speed. Tough to say and I'm a huge fan, but he seemed a tad over his head this game for sure. Hence the limited ice time IMO.

He really hasn't had a good game yet since the foot injury. If I were coach, I'd give him the Monday game off, giving him basically a week between games.

Really enjoyed last nights game, especially as we managed to keep it to a 1 goal game against one of the best teams in the league right now.
I think the one thing that came out to me thought was the difference in skill level between the two teams. The pens were making good tape to tape passes, were as too many time we had passes go off skates or behind the players leading to a pens turn over. We cannot keep doing that otherwise we are putting our goalies under more pressure than they already are.
Backlund is turning into a great centre man, those points are going to start piling up if he keeps playing the way he is right now.
Monahan seems to be struggling right now and I think he needs more time off to ensure that break is healed. I don't know why but i think he was rushed back when there was really no reason to. Just an opinion with nothing to back it up.
Smid showed some real grit last night, that one shift where he took a big hit at one end and then worked his way back to break up the pens play before bouncing into the boards, really impressed by his play. Cannot believe that the oilers let him go but glad they did.

Was thinking this as well. Give him an extra few days to relax the foot, give B. Jones, Byron, Galiardi all a spot in the lineup

What's not a wash is the fact that if Sarich shows he's still capable of being a depth defenseman, he is exactly the type of defenseman to trade at the deadline for a 5th to 3rd round pick. O'Brien is close to untradeable given that he averages just over 10 minutes a game, doesn't have the reputation of having the greatest attitude, and has another year at $2M.

|
And what's your point? You think the Flames would be able to dump Jones' contract? Couldn't you say the same thing about Tanguay's contract which is averages $500K less than Jones' contract: The team could have kept Tanguay's contract which helps keep the Flames above the cap floor and having one $3.5 million dollar bad contract as your only bad contract is fine for the Flames at the moment.

That's pure speculation on your part. When Hartley was hired there was much made about his connection to Tanguay and Tanguay was very complimentary of Hartley. I've heard nothing that suggest that Tanguay's and Hartley's opinion of each other has changed. Of course if Tanguay wanted a trade because he didn't want to be in a losing environment that's a different story but Tanguay is on record as saying he was sad to leave Calgary. He considered it home.

Jones Vs. Tanguay:
Calgary has played the most 1-goal games in the league this year, largely because of their effort and consistency in regards to line changes, offsides, icings and neutral zone responsibility. Being focused and playing with character in all three zones has kept Calgary in many games they shouldn't have been in this year, but more importantly, has prevented confidence shattering, hair pulling blowouts on a routine basis.
Tanguay is awful in terms of all those attributes listed. Consistently going offside, consistently lollygagging to the bench, consistently irresponsible in the neutral zone
Calgary flames hockey was unwatchable last year until the deadline when things got broken up. After that, though, Tanguay was still a noticeable sore thumb in the lineup in the same way Glencross was to start this season. 1 Player out of 23 playing a different game than the rest of the team. A player who gets his points at the price of winning games or appearing competitive.
Down by 2, with the opposition sitting back protecting a lead? Tanguay is your guy.
Push the pace from minute 1 to minute 60? I'd take Jones 10/10.
I look at the Oilers and I see a team full of Tanguays.

I look at the Oilers and see a bunch of David Jones.
A bunch of guys that do absolutely nothing out there to help their team win.
Tanguay was overpaid, because of the ridiculous contract some idiot gave him, and a malcontent but at least he brought something to the game.
Jones adds 0 to this team. He isn't tough, isn't skilled, isn't responsible defensively, doesn't hit. Throw in his horrible deal and he is a real waste of a roster spot.
Keeping Tanguay was a bad idea. Trading him for two stiffs that likely shouldn't be in the league and giving up Sarich as well was a much worse idea.
