Hmmm not sure I understand the Major Nelson tweet - I thought the PS4 did over a million the first day.

EDIT: Oh FFS, Major Nelson is averaging the Xbone sales numbers over the days in November. At 101K per day and the 9 days it was available, they sold 909,000 Xbones.

The PS4 did over a million the first day (but over North America - probably not that many relatively speaking in Canada). So he's averaging the PS4 numbers over the additional days it was available to knock down the total PS4 number lower.

"XboxOne was the fastest selling console in NA last month"

909K is a great number, but that spin!

But Sony says they are #1?

Sony has just said that PS4 was the top selling next-gen platform in November for "both hardware and software" per NPD.

I love this console nuclear arms race. I hope it continues throughout the generation and both companies just go insane trying to best each other. Remember when consoles were "dead"?

^ Are you referring to the great video game crash of '83?

No, I was born in 1985, so I don't.

In regards to the tweets, do they differentiate between fastest selling and 'top' selling in the same way a car with a quicker 0-60 MPH time might still have a lower top speed than another? Fastest sales vs highest sales perhaps? I don't pay attention to this stuff, but if there's one thing I've learned, it's that minute differences in words chosen by marketing can make a big difference in the actual message.

Even if there is a video game crash, my backlog is so large I should be okay for a decade or two.

Yeah, the Major Nelson spin is pretty disingenuous imo. The Xbone sold great in North America, just not #1 though - so he apparently felt the need to take a really silly stab at spinning it. Based on his metric, the should have set the Xbone release for the last day of November so he could claim that one day sales rate was multiples times the PS4 average over the month. Still less total numbers sold either way.

Rumor now is that Microsoft will now swing more stock to North America and maybe even delay the rollout to other countries to try to keep US/Canada a Microsoft stronghold. I believe the 360 lead the PS3 in the US, Canada and the UK but the PS3 had the rest of the world. Interesting that the PS4 leads a bit (or is fairly even) in North America and the UK so far this generation. Can the Xbone do better than the 360 did in Europe and Asia? Who knows - interesting times!

Pretty impossible to speculate on sales numbers until there are some damn games for either of these systems.

Microsoft is currently being sued by their own share holders for misleading sales numbers on the surface so take whatever they say with a grain of salt

Actually it could have been any time since the PS3 launch where numbers were a little weak and everybody began spouting off about how maybe consoles just wouldn't be released anymore.

Honestly not sure what the issue is. "Fastest" implies a rate which is going to be a per day type thing. "Most" would be the actual number sold, but the One likely wouldn't win that number given one less week of sales and clearly less NA supply at launch compared to the PS4. So rate makes the most sense for them to use.

In the end the numbers still are completely meaningless as they are supply limited still. I wouldn't be shocked to see end of year numbers in NA to favour the Xbox One as they seem to be consistently trickling them into stores (and amazon) at a steadier rate and greater numbers. Amazon will let you order them but will say "1-2 days for processing" which indicates they are getting regular shipments of consistent numbers so that if they aren't in stock they know it will be. It's consistently been at the #1-4 ranking in amazont he last week and a half. PS4 remains top 100 but is currently being outsold by the 360.

Yup, totally agree with you about the supply side and why Major Nelson would rather choose that particular metric rate for his PR take on the numbers.

But I would suggest that it is rather disingenuous (if not outright incorrect) to describe it as the "fastest selling" when the direct comparison sold more in one single day than it did over 9 days.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why he wanted to take that PR spin but I think it is rather silly as the Xbone sales numbers are pretty damn impressive without it.

Hmm some more data points about the PS4's selling out so quickly on Amazon. Apparently they supplied Amazon with 12,000 sometime last week and they sold out in 27 minutes. Anybody see any numbers about Xbone supply? Hopefully we'll see more data as time as goes on.

On a side note, if we use Major Nelson's selective statistical methods = "the PS4 is selling at a rate of 19,000,000 consoles per month."

I still don't see anythign being disingenuous. It's marketing. You are going to frame things in the best light possible and given that the first thing the media did with the xbox also selling a million in 24 hours was talk about the 13 countries vs 2 countries thing, it's a losing proposition to put lower gross numbers to the street when you can put favourable sales rates to the street. It would be disingenuous if they started selling on the same day.

No idea how many Xbox Ones Amazon got but I'm guessing a good chunk more given the #1-4 ranking of the One the past 7-10 days compared to the 20-70th the PS4 has been in that time (in video games...not sure overall amazon ranking).

There are moments in FIFA 14 where the game feels quite realistic. Although that only makes me look forward to what they'll put out next year on top of NHL15.

Out of curiosity, my PS4 is pretty loud whenever there's a disc inside spinning. Anybody notice this as well? Only other ambient sound is...well whatever is coming from the TV. At the moment I easily notice it when I'm about 5 or 6 feet away.

Edit: PSN is Nhamlet. Got FIFA14, Killzone and whenever my friend returns it, Battlefield 4. Add me since I have no friends.

Yes, the PS4 is quite loud with a disc spinning inside. I can hear it more than I can hear my XBox One though the noise volume seems to fluctuate.

The XB1 is the quieter machine but not by a lot as the PS4 is pretty quiet IMO. Both of these are far quieter than the original Xbox 360 and PS3's which were loud consoles.

this may come off as a nearly psycho question... but for people who've held both ps3/ps4 and xbox 360/one controllers... do you notice the thumb stick and the distance from it to the face buttons? one reason i never played the ps3 was the controller was so small when my finger was resting on the face buttons (triangle square etc) it would be just so slightly rubbing against the right analog stick.

The ps4 controller looks a lot bigger and it seems there's a lot of room between the right analog stick and the face buttons. is this true of both xbone and ps4?

I read an interesting review of FIFA for Xbox One, you can use the Kinect voice controls to make substitutions, change tactics and change formations, all while playing the game. No need to hit pause and scroll through menus. That is a pretty fantastic feature. Is this something that Xbox One games will have an advantage over PS4 for the entire generation, or will PS4 have voice commands too eventually? That seems like it could be a big advantage, especially in sports games.
