I bet Burke goes after Carter Ashton from TO. A big young RW that hasn't developed.

Interesting that Conroy was sitting with Burke at the Sabres game.

Conroy led the coup and provided Burkie with all the juicy details.

Friedman says Flames have been granted permission to talk to Benning.

Confirms Kings haven't given permission to Sabres for Futa.

Mike Futa's bio from the LA Kings website:
http://kings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40773
Sounds sort of like a Kelly Kisio (at the time) move for the Kings. A guy fresh from the CHL who has had lots of experience.

Perhaps Kisio wouldn't be the best available GM hire right now, but maybe he would make a great Director of Scouting? I think he is one guy to really take a look at into bringing into the Flames' organization, and could fill a few different key roles on the team.

I guess Burke Hightower it to Toronto after the game. Not fond of that, I hope he isn't looking to hire a puppet.

They just showed Burke chatting with Poulin and Loiselle on CBC at the Leafs game.

Personally I don't care if the GM's a puppet as long as the direction he's getting from Burke is sound. Feaster was a puppet and unfortunately he was taking direction from King and the owners which is why the team is where it is today.

Futa's drafting record is insane.

What are peoples' views on Benning?

The thing about all of this is that we really know so little about these guys. We can see whether the teams they work for are successful, but we all have no idea how much each teams success really depends on guys like Poulin and Benning.
i.e. is Benning good at drafting or was he just working with guys who were good at drafting?

Benning was Director of Amateur Scouting in Buffalo from 98 to 04 ... some good draft picks in there:

1999 - 5th round, 138th overall - G Ryan Miller
2000 - 7th round, 220th overall - F Paul Gaustad
2001 - 2nd round, 32nd overall - F Derek Roy
2001 - 2nd round, 50th overall - F Chris Thorburn
2001 - 2nd round, 55th overall - F Jason Pominville
2002 - 1st round, 11th overall - D Keith Ballard
2002 - 1st round, 20th overall - F Daniel Paille
2002 - 8th round, 241th overall - D Dennis Wideman
2003 - 1st round, 5th overall - F Thomas Vanek
2003 - 3rd round, 74th overall - F Clarke MacArthur
2003 - 4th round, 106th overall - D Jan Hejda
2004 - 1st round, 13th overall - F Drew Stafford
2004 - 3rd round, 71st overall - D Andrej Sekera
2004 - 6th round, 176th overall - F Patrick Kaleta

1999 and 2000 were pretty bad for them though in the early rounds.

Benning was the director of amateur scouting in Buffalo from 1998-2004. In that timeframe, The Sabres drafted 21 players who played more than 100 games in the NHL including: Stafford, Vanek, MacArthur, Hejda, Ballard, Paille, Wideman, Roy, Pominville, Gaustad, Miller, and Kotalik.

I think he would be a great addition to the Flames management in any capacity.

If the Kings refused Buffalo permission to talk to Futa I doubt they let Burke.

Flames gave LA permission to talk to Sutter. Maybe they pay them back. Who knows if Buffalo ever didn't give them permission once and hold a grudge. Who knows. All I know is LA owes the Flames one for Sutter, however Sutter was canned at the time and not an integral part of an upcoming draft....

You do have a point with the Sutter permission and he won them a cup. Who knows.

Maybe that's the reason they kept Button on, they needed to have someone to run the draft if they can't hire the guy they want (Futa) before the draft.
