Seriously - B. Sutter has the same mentality as Burke, is a black and blue Alberta guy through and through, knows all about drafting big WHL guys, etc. He's probably perfect for the job.

Oh my god this thread is about to explode....

dated article as Nill has already been hired but this may give us more clues as to who is available and ready. Love the Benning talk as he comes from a winning organization that's won a cup and Burke probably has familiarity with his trades with Boston:

Shawn Simpson of TSN1200 seems to think Dave Poulin is the favourite:

Poulin?
Perfect "Yes Man" for Burke?
Sure seems like that would be the case.

The body of work is amazing. Playoffs 15 of the last 17 seasons. 2 championships. I honestly think that he has NEVER made a bad trade. An excellent judge of talent. Knows how to build a winning team. A Calgarian and a Flames alumni.
The fact that he has very little NHL experience would be mitigated by having Burke.
The only thing that I wouldn't like about the hiring is that he would no longer be with the Hitmen.

You also forgot that his son married a Sutter. So he will fit in well, he is practically family.

I would find that concerning. I'd rather it be someone else.

Burke has already said he's going to be all around the team now so he will be making it his team. The new GM can come in and be a yes man to Burke but its not like up in Edmonton where the guy above is a clown.
Burke will be running this team. He will bring in guys who will be doing the dirty work.
If Burke hadn't been brought in 3 months ago and was now being introduced as the GM I don't many would have an issue with that.
I, for one am very excited to see what transpires. I'm sure he will move out Stempniak, Cammi, Stajan etc and get something decent in return and not try to re-sign them.
Lets go Burkie.

I really can't judge the difference between Hextall, Benning, Fenton, Poulin, Muta... I'll leave that up to Burke.
I just hope that whoever is in charge of hockey operations can convince King and Edwards that just sneaking into the playoffs and hoping for a miracle run does not constitute a plan.
Looking forward to the era of the Black & Blue Flames, where teams know in order to get two points, they're going to have to leave the 'Dome with bruises.

I would have thought he'd nab Loiselle if he was going to nab someone from Toronto but the fact that he went back to somebody he has a history with isn't surprising.

It won't be Burke, but I also hope that it is. I feel similar to this as I did when Darryl Sutter was looking for a new head coach (when he eventually hired Brent). I felt like Darryl would be the best candidate and hoped that he would coach but knew that he wouldn't. Although I did hear rumblings that he wanted to but ownership wouldn't let him. Not sure how true that is.
I think Darryl would have had success with that roster as a coach at that point in time.

Burke just wants to hire his puppet so he can play puppet master out of the spotlight.
Said back during the hiring that he wanted to be in the background more, and not constantly swarmed by the media. But he'll also want to do things his way of course. So, explains everything.
I don't want Toronto's trash though still..

Alan Muir thinks Mike Futa is a good choice:
http://nhl.si.com/2013/12/12/calgary...burke-on-deck/
Quote:
One name to keep a close eye on: Mike Futa. In his role as the Kings’ director of amateur scouting, he drafted Drew Doughty, Slava Voynov, Andrei Loktionov, Brayden Schenn, Kyle Clifford, Jordan Nolan and Linden Vey — from just the 2008 and ’09 classes alone. Futa doesn’t just have a great eye for talent, he has an eye for the heavy, truculent talent that Burke covets for Calgary.
|
Mike Futa's bio from the LA Kings website:
http://kings.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=40773
Quote:
Michael Futa is in his sixth full season with the Kings as Director of Amateur Scouting. He was named to his current position on June 5, 2007.
Futa came to the Kings after five successful seasons as General Manager of the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he was named OHL Executive of the Year in 2005. The Attack advanced to the post-season in all five seasons with Futa at the helm, and high profile players like Trevor Lewis (17th overall, 2006 NHL Entry Draft) and Wayne Simmonds (second round, 61st overall, 2007 NHL Entry Draft) played for Owen Sound during Futa’s tenure there. Futa has also served as Director of Team Ontario’s Under-17 program for three seasons, and his Under-17 team won the gold medal at the Canada Games in 2007.
Prior to his time with the Attack, Futa served as both an Assistant Coach and Assistant General Manager with the Oshawa Generals (OHL) for two seasons (1999-01). The native of Toronto also served first as an Assistant Coach and then as a Head Coach of Toronto St. Michael’s Majors (OHL) from 1997-00. Prior to that, he served as Head Coach and General Manager of the St. Michael’s Buzzers (Provincial Junior “A”).
Before turning to the coaching ranks, Futa played four seasons of professional hockey in Europe (two seasons in Germany and two seasons in Denmark). The former left wing also captained his team at York University, where he was also honored as the student who best combined academics and athletics at the school during his senior season.
