Am I missing something? The very vocal anti fighting crowd seems to be using this incident as a sounding board for more anti fighting rhetoric.

You guys do realize it's pretty ridiculous to make the comments you're making as you guys are sarcastically asking why fighting didn't prevent this, which would suggest that the pro-fighting crowd is adamant that all cheapshots are prevented due to the presence of fighting. Which of course, no one is claiming.

Thornton had three suspend able offences in that 10 second clip.

1) slew foot which was way worse then the one giordano was suspended for last year.
2) 3rd man in
3) sucker punch

I think a 20+ game suspension is in order.

Neal should be 10+ blatant cheap shot.

In my personal opinion I am happy that Neal did it to Marchand as Marchand would have done theexactsame thing had it been the other way. Too bad it wasn't to Matt Cooke though.

I hope they don't make some sort of jump to talking about fighting. I didn't see any fights, just a few cheapshots that could happen regardless of gloves getting dropped

Weekes saying that Crosby should have been penalized for the trip and this wouldn't have happened

PJ saying the optics look bad but it was just 2 little punches

Rogers can put something together better than this....

If you banned fighting that could still happen.
One could put up a strong argument that incidents like this would happen more, not less.

Yeah, I didn't get to see that replay that was posted before my comment. It is worse then I originally thought. I'd say 10 for Neal and 25 for Thornton. I hadn't realized Neal turned his knee and moved a little to his left to make contact. Terrible play.

That's a pretty big leap to make. Like being accused of cheating on your wife because you lied about quitting smoking. (Bill Engvall joke?)

Neal is still playing too. I wonder if Bylsma is going to pull him from the game, as it could get ugly in the third.

Scumbag Neal scored right out of the box btw. He should have been tossed as well.

The instigator rule undermines the police-ing on the ice.

Orpik was challenged by Thornton skated away, Thornton couldn't do anymore without taking an instigator. Neal took a cheap shot skated away. Thornton got frustrated and did something stupid.

Give Thornton 40 games. Trips an unsuspecting players, then KO's him with two punches to the head.

Sorry, that's nowhere near a hockey play. 40 games.

Neal should also get 10 games or so.

This isn't F'n twitter with a character limit, Tinordi. Just use one post to make your point. I get what you're trying to do; Rile people up by being incessant, but just post like a normal person. We got your point the first time.

Thorton should get 10 games for that.

Neal should get 20.

Disgusting display tonight. This garbage makes me ashamed to be a hockey fan.

Yes and no. It depends on suspensions. If you ban fighting and give out big suspension for stuff like this then it will stop.

If you continue with 2 game suspensions then it'll be dirty.

In other sports where fighting is banned fights and cheapshots still happen and the suspensions are severe.

Why should Orpik have to fight a goon like Thornton? It wasn't a dirty hit. We were all just raging about Ference fighting Stempniak in a similar deal.
