Because isn't one of the arguments for fighting to prevent these types of plays? Sure is working well!

On the initial fall, he didn't hit his head on the ice, plus the second punch he took his head lightly hit the ice with his helmet on. I'm just saying players punching each other in the face in scrums with their gloves on look more brutal than what Thornton did. The fact Orpik was carried off on the stretcher justifies the brutality of the act.

Fists flying at a downed players face has NO connection to the "code" and fighting. This is an "isolated" incident and a "cheapshot" in and of itself beating no resemblance to honour bound fighting to protect the very players it punches.

If the nhl is really serious Thornton should suspended for the remainder of the season.
I can understand an immediate reaction to a clean hit (since you don't know it was clean and it's instinct). But with replay today the Bruins would have known it was clean and deliberately go after someone is blatantly wrong.

I think when it is a guy like Thornton who doesn't give a crap about fighting then no it isn't likely to prevent it.
I would say if anything that fighting might prevent the keep slashes that happen a lot in CIS and Euro hockey as a. guys have a way to 'get a guy' if they want ie fight him and b. the cheap little pricks aren't able to have free reign as much.
But likely proper reffing/suspensions does more to prevent it than fighting.

This ticks all the criteria for a very long suspension, deliberate, premeditated and on a defenseless player. Throw the book at him, the most despicable act I've seen in a very long time.

Thornton should be gone for the year.
Neal should get 10 games minimum, probably a lot more.
Of course Thornton will get something like 5 games and Neal will get 2.

I think it depends on the severity of Orpik's injuries. If he's concussed, or is out long-term, they'll definitely throw the book at Thornton, and give him 20+ games. But, if he's back next game it might only be 8-12. I don't think it's as bad as some are saying, and it's not near as bad as Bertuzzi's takedown of Moore. Still he deserves whatever suspension they decide to give him.

Hey not trying to start a war of words with you. Just thought that how hard he got hit shouldn't have any bearing on any decisions being made.

Pens v Bruins is becoming one of the best rivalries in the NHL. I hope they meet in the playoffs again.

Stock is well known for being a Bruin supporter (of course he played three seasons for them). So no surprise that he's in "their corner" on this.

But that wasnt fighting. That was an ambush.
If you banned fighting that could still happen.

I would give Neal the rest of the year. That was a blantant intent to injure.
