Microns, baby.
I played on those for years!

They were struggling to start the year and Nabokov got hurt. Plus they already traded that first rounder to Buffalo.
If the Season ended today Buffalo would have the 1st and 4th overall draft picks, potentially 1st and 2nd if the Islanders pick won the lottery.

Eh. I'm sure they'll heat up and pass us soon enough. Just stinks that one of the biggest bright spots for us is now down. Watch Sven get injured next.

That islanders pick is top 10 protected I believe? Not sure for how many years but 2014 for sure

Just checked and you are correct.
Would be risky to defer that into the stacked McDavid draft though.
Imagine Tavares gets hurt for the year and the Islanders then have to give the 1st overall pick and McDavid to the Sabres.

Regarding the skate guards: apparently players don't like the fact that they make controlling a puck in the skates difficult to control. Pucks richochet off them harder than the softer skate. It's a puck control issue but it seems like the kind of thing you could adapt to.

It's also difficult to control the puck when you have a broken ankle. I really do question how bright a lot of athletes are.
Howie Meeker made a comment in the Globe and Mail a couple weeks ago about disallowing blocking shots. Said they increase injuries and reduce scoring. I'm starting to agree with him.

I am legitimately curious what Howie Meeker proposed to do if/when a shot is blocked in order to "disallow" it? Maybe we should ban slapshots and forechecking too. Crazy old man.

Sucks for Monahan because I thought he might have a chance at the Calder and World Jrs.
I guess if there was any year for injuries, this is the year for them. No expectations. Just let the kids play and see what we have.
Also, hopefully Backlund can improve his play (if Hartley moves him up the line up) and will squash any trade talk.

He's saying players shouldn't be allowed to go down to block shots. Leaving their feet.

Funny, but you don't see much of the sliding block Howie must be referring to. I think most blocks are due to positioning and having the cajones not to get the hell out of the way. Definitely bad luck on the part of Wideman. From the replay, I am not certain he even saw the shot.

Theoretically I'm not against the idea, but in practice I doubt that would make any difference, so a pointless rule. Most of those injuries happen with the player standing anyway.

Why are we even discussing the skate guards in this thread? Has there been any indication that Monahan wasn't wearing them in practice that day?
He was wearing them in the Florida game...
He was wearing them in the Oilers game...
It's hard to believe he wouldn't have been wearing them in a practice in between those two games.
No protective equipment is ever going to provide 100% protection against injury. It's possible that wearing the skate guard is what kept Monahan's injury to a hairline fracture and only missing a week or two instead of a broken foot and missing 4-6 weeks.
Obviously, skate guards aren't going to do anything to protect Wideman's wrist. Although, it would be nice if a defenceman wore gloves that didn't leave so much skin exposed.

Here's what Howie had to say on the subject....
Quote:
Shot blocking: “It should be a penalty. If you leave your feet to go down to stop a shot, it should be a penalty. If you go down to block a pass, no problem, but to me it’s obvious that it should be a two-minute penalty if you go down to block a shot on goal. This isn’t entertainment. It just makes for dull hockey. It’s crazy. The NHL needs goals and here they’re doing everything possible to stop goals from going in. They’ve got to be out of their minds.”

Father's Trip I assume. He's not going to have his dad miss out last minute.
This is tough, of course for the players (but a Monahan "break" may not be the worst idea either), but also for the young call ups.
Being forced to come up and play roles on a team with that's not very good in the first place, and now called up simply for the reason that they're a healthy warm body, is a tough situation for all involved.

Burke. Not a player, but he's at least worth 2 or 3 guys.
