Did Bettman and the NHL not watch any Canadian hockey broadcasts the past 10 years?? This is mind bottling. Where are the online petitions? and FU Bettman!

Why would they spend money on somebody like Cuthbert when Kerr will do it for a quarter of the price?

People could not watch. Hockey is religion for our age range but is it really for the kids today? If the product/broadcast is crap eyeballs will go elsewhere, advertisers will go elsewhere and it'll go bankrupt.

Regarding that CBC news... that's a big hit to their revenue if they aren't getting to keep the ad revenue from HNIC. Wonder what happens with it...

For a deal this massive, I just can't see them maintaining the status quo. My money is on Sportsnet improving the quality of their product starting in 2014-15. Hell, we may even see some TSN personalities switch teams.
Maybe I'm just a little skeptical, but do you remember the last time Sportsnet decided to rebrand / reimage?

We got the freaking Buffalo Bills logo and a Magazine.

Lets hope this NHL foray is as successful as Rogers getting the Bills to play games in Toronto.

Too bad to hear, sportsnet does a great job covering some of the secondary sports but their hockey coverage is cartoonish and terrible. Kypreos and McLean are just so grating. Hockey is on the decline a little among younger people in Canada compared to when I was young and I'm surprised rogers would spend this kind of money. Hopefully more of a cable centric focus doesn't kill the game off even more.

That's right, I wasn't showing the differential between this deal and the prior one. Thanks for the clarification.

Yup looks more and more like Rogers will take over HNIC... they own Saturday night broadcast rights, CBC is giving them $0, the CBC agreement with Rogers is only for 4 years, Rogers has full control of HNIC on air talent and editing.

Prepare for the slow transition of HNIC to a Sportsnet program.

It's no worse than CBC. Hughson and Lee are the worse play-by-play men on this earth. The panel of Healy, Stock and Weekes is a joke. Sure their montages are great, just hire that guy.

I do like TSN and what's good about this deal now is that SN will get to hand-pick the talent it wants to buy in order to improve it's product.

Don Cherry will retire in 4 years anyways so that's a good time to cut off CBC for good.

I'm excited to see what Sportsnet can do. They'll have to be ramping up production values to go alongside this fancy new 12 year deal.

I'm sure in the summer you'll see some high profile personalities sign some pretty big deals with Sportsnet.

This is like the worst nightmare for a Cdn hockey fan.

If TSN wanted to win the rights they should have just went into the negotiations with segments of Sportsnet clips. Starting off with Rob Kerr and Charlie Simmer.

With Rogers in full control of Canadian NHL broadcasts i wonder if this means the coverage per team will remain the same by farming out contracts to TSN and CBC or will the amount of covered games slide. I can't see Sportsnet covering all the games that all 3 combined currently do.
I could see Rogers start up channels and make me people pay to see many games

I find it interesting that they bought up the rights for everything including out of market and Center Ice. I wonder if the plan is to offer single team and multi team packages across the country, and start charging a hefty premium for the channels. ie, you can buy a Flames package anywhere in the country including Calgary for $10/month via tv or internet, or an all team package for $20/month, otherwise you only get the national games.

I hope the Flames "expansive pre-and-post" game coverage continues to be Faceoff with the Flood reruns.

I'd love to see Friedman and Mackenzie on the same panel, ditch the rest.
