In guessing this has already been stated, but does this deal start the beginning of next season?

|
It kind of reads like all games on Wed, Sat, and Sunday will be shown nationally without regional blackouts.
But Rogers has bought in market and out of market rights for all games except Winnipeg, so they may be able to sell this however they like. I'd expect a rather large bump in carriage fees for the Sportnet networks to be passed on to cable and sat bills.

Why would they spend money on somebody like Cuthbert when Kerr will do it for a quarter of the price?
|
Um because they still have to put on a good show or the viewers will stop watching. Less viewers = less money.

Ist year payment alone is $375M. That's $12.5M in HRR per team (375/30), and a cap increase of $6.25. (12.5/2)
When payments approach $500M, that's $16.67M in HRR and a cap increase of $8.33M.

I'm sad about this, as I liked the quality of the production on TSN. However, to those that think this may just be an extension of the crappy broadcasting quality on Sportsnet.... I'm not worried. I would assume Sportsnet is going to ramp up the quality once the actual broadcasts occur.
For a deal this massive, I just can't see them maintaining the status quo. My money is on Sportsnet improving the quality of their product starting in 2014-15. Hell, we may even see some TSN personalities switch teams.

It's not that they weren't willing to spend the money but rather than Rogers shocked everyone including the NHL with their offer.

Sad to see HNIC as we know it all but dead now. Assuming they do change the staff up, I won't miss people like Healey or Stock, but the production as a whole cannot stay the same if Rogers is taking over, and it will be missed.

This sucks for for any Flames fan outside Alberta. I could at least watch 10 games a year on TSN. I am guessing that they will all be local games and blacked-out.

As Flames fans, we've had Sportsnet cover 75% of our games since the lockout and we complain about the quality in every GT. Yet we always watch the game... because we have no choice. Canadians will always watch hockey.
SN even actually downgraded from Loubardias to Kerr already. I wonder if we'll get another new PBP guy next season.

Yes but of that $375 million already $190 million is part of HRR as part of the last broadcast deal, so the cap won't increase as much as you are showing.
1st year represents a cap increase of (375-190)/30 *.5 = $3.08 million

I can't believe TSN comes out empty handed. Hopefully Rogers poaches some of the talent which will increase the talent that will call into the FAN.
At the end of the day with Calgary already affiliated with Rogers this is not a bad thing
