I prefer to think of him as the next Phil Russel, or possibly Steve Konroyd.
If he wants to be Russell, he has to grow a GI Joe style 80's stache. If he wants to be Konroyd, he has to get kneed in the head during a fight with an Oiler goon.

In Giordano's absence does Smid now play on the 1st pairing with Brodie? He has experience playing with O'Brien, so does he play 3rd-pairing plus PK minutes?
I really like this acquisition. REALLY.

I hope he's not on first pairing. Over his head imo. He's never been more than a #4 or so for the most part from what I've seen, and that's on a weaker blueline than ours

He's been a 3/4 shutdown D for his entire career with the Oilers. He's the perfect compliment to Brodie until Gio gets back, and he's a vastly superior option to Butler on the 1st pairing. We know what that gets us.

He's probably a better option than Butler until Giordano comes back. I hope he's at least given the opportunity after a few games, if he shows he's adapting well to the team.

When did Smid play with O'Brien?

Maybe in the AHL with Portland in 05-06. Not a big factor either way IMO.

Feaster said in the trade interview that they wanted to improve the blueline even before Gio got hurt, and specifically mentioned how the 3rd pairing has played very low minutes.
Out of the six guys that we started the season with (Gio, Brodie, Wideman, Russell, Butler and SOB), O'Brien has been playing way lower minutes than the rest.
I'm reading between the lines here, but it sounds like they've been unsatisfied with SOB since the beginning. So I expect to see him pushed out of the lineup.

I would agree with that. I was actually happy when the Flames signed SOB because I thought he'd be the jacka** that the Flames were (are) missing.

While Gio is still out, i would rather see Smid pair with Brodie than Brodie-Butler pairing. I don't have any problem Butler but with playing lots of minutes, he tends to make mistakes than when he is playing with 5-6 minutes average.

In any case I hope they keep Butler with a puckmover. Seems to cut down a ton of his worst mistakes.

I like when he says that the Oilers players he talked to are upset that he got traded.
Excellent.

Looks like he is wearing #3!
Carrying on the awesome tradition of Pat Quinn, Pat Ribble, Phil Russell, Tony Curtale, Steve Konroyd, Kevan Guy, Rick Lessard, Frank Musil, James Patrick, Denis Gauthier, Dion Phaneuf, Ian White, & Brett Carson!
