Huh? Gio had a phenomenal start before being injured.

If you think that Gio struggled in the top pairing then you should not want to see a much, much worse player in Smid to fill that spot.

When Gio is healthy the Flames will be so much better on the backend now that Smid is in the mix.
Gio - Brodie
Wideman - Russell
Smid - Butler/Son of a B
Smid will play a big role on the PK and will be able to help Wideman reduce his 2nd in NHL icetime stat.

I think Brossoit has a lot more potential than Roy. I think Roy is a guy that the Oilers asked the Flames to take back and not a guy we really wanted.
I don't see the goaltenders as anywhere close to a wash. Brossoit is a much, much better prospect than Roy IMO.

I have been taking a lot of joy reading the Oilers board over at HF. Apparently he is a guy that is always smiling. I am still pretty shocked about this trade. Edmonton moves one of their only Dmen that play with a bit of sandpaper for prospects. They say he is a warrior, shot blocker, who is accountable and stand up for his teammates. He fits the Flames needs but also is exactly what the Oilers need more of.
The reaction amongst the Oilers fanbase is very similar to Flamea fans in 2010 when we moved Dion and then Olli. Our only response was "this has to be leading to something bigger so this all makes sense". Oilers fans are waiting for another shoe to drop that will explain this terrible trade from their perspective. Unfortunately for them I don't think that trade is coming

I really like this trade for the Flames. Nice to get Smid. Brossoit has potential and may turn into a star but thats far down the road and hopefully one of our other goalies steps up their game.
Edit: Not sure how this trade makes sense from the Oilers' perspective at all. They've got a terrible defense and I cant see how moving Smid improves the defense at all. The Oilers need to get better now. I dont see how Horak or Brossoit help the Oilers today or in the immediate future. I also cant believe that no team offered something better than what the Flames gave up. Strange trade especially with your provincial rival.

has already happened I think ... it was to sign Bryzgalov. Don't think they have another move in line ... well, a normal organization should have one, but we all know how brilliant their management is.

100% right. Broissoit has a shot to be a good one, but he wasn't going to get that shot with us.
Roy is brought in to play some time in the ECHL.
The Oilers will give Broissoit a chance to be the heir apparent. He'll get 60 starts this year.

Lots do. I remember Jokinen loved his Coyotes gloves so much that he painted over them to start in Calgary after coming over from Phoenix.

I was talking to an oiler fan today, and I said that I feel like what those anti-rob ford guys must be feeling right now. I'm giddy at the trainwreck that is happening.
The response was interesting. They wanted the Oilers to do well, but not under Lowe's watch. That was the first person to say it like that, but I think it properly characterizes Oiler fans up here who I talk to.

I think you are right but an Oilers fans perspective they were sure Simmonds and Schenn/Coburn were on their way to EDM. The fact MacT has basically said they are done making moves for now has added to their rage.

Lots of posters on HF are saying that they hope Smid crushes their young guys for years to come just to show how much of an idiot Klown (and MacT) is. That fanbase is truly in crisis.

Yup, another Czech defenceman who played for both the Flames and Oilers.
