Well, you can't seriously consider the quote I cited informative, can you? To me, this an example of saying nothing in many words. I much prefer Burke's straightforwardness.

Late to the party ... great trade again Feaster! I think he has been on fire since finally announcing that the Flames are rebuilding.
I feel really bad for Horak and Brossoit though. Joining that team of losers, knowing that their fans already talk about how Smid was given away for nothing ... that's brutal. Obviously Brossoit knows Edmonton very well, but I hope for Horak that he isn't part of that circus for long.

You know the Flames have made a good trade when the best the Feaster haters can come with is "I don't like the way he talked about it".

Horak via the Herald:
“I’m obviously disappointed but at the time I guess there were guys that deserved it more. It’s always in your hands but at the same time it’s not. You have managers and coaches, someone likes you, someone doesn’t like you. Sometimes it plays out like that and it played out that way with me.
“I played one game, got four minutes of ice time and then got sent down,” he said, referring to an Oct. 22 match against Phoenix
Smid, in the Edmonton Sun:
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2013/11/0...urent-brossoit
“Obviously I was shocked,” said Smid. “But I know this is always a possibility. I’ve talked to my family, I’ve talked to my wife and we’re excited about a new start.”
...
“This is a deal that I had difficulty with,” said Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish. “We talk about creating a new culture of hard work and selfness and rewarding that and Ladislav definitely falls in that category.
...
Smid goes to a team that he’s had epic battles with, particularly with Flames captain Mark Giordano.
The two have fought three times in the numerous encounters between the team.
“Yeah, that’s going to be fun playing with him,” Smid said. “We’ve had a lot of battles over the years. But he’s a really good guy and a great captain for the team.”

Adding Smid satisfies one glaring need in the current team. He's the right age to contribute for a few years, he's a solid hockey player, big body & I still think he has unfulfilled potential. Another player Burke should be very familiar with from his Anaheim days. Wasn't he drafted 6th overall?
I will now feel more comfortable judging the goalies we have now, as I feel Smid adds about 25 minutes a game of crease protection & good positioning.
I liked Horak, but now I will enjoy watching him lose on a frequent basis.

So... if they wanted to upgrade before Gio got hurt.. I wonder if SOB is in trouble when he comes back.
Prior to the injury we were going with:
Gio, Brodie, Russell, Wideman, Butler and O'Brien (with Smith hanging around and Breen injured)
Given that Butler has jumped up in ice time with Gio's injury - safe to say he would be #5 pre-Smid and #6 with Smid.

I have always liked Smid's game - he had to play over his head in Edmonton (and he probably will here too), but on the 2nd pairing he's very solid - always thought of him as Warrener with more skill. Horak appears to be a career tweener, so the only wild card is Brossoit. Otherwise, it's a nice deal. The only downside - it's yet another player from a losing organization. I don't know if he will make the playoffs here before his contract expires, but certainly a very good transition player (like Giordano) to hold the fort until whatever it is we are doing bears fruit.

And I didn't. What's a big deal?
You are exaggerating. Why would you conclude that I hate Feaster? Because I didn't like his quote? Come on, man.

On CHED630, talking about the trade...
"This is essentially Smid for Bryzgalov"
That pretty much sums up how much we gave up to get a solid defenseman

I don't think Horak and Brossoit are nothing...
We now essentially only have one RW prospect, and that's Poirier.

Smid hasn't ever come close to playing 25 mins (only over 20 mins 3 times and never over 21) in his career even on those horrible Oilers defense corps so I wouldn't expect him to play 25 mins or anything close at all.

I don't think they're nothing either.
But nor are they a lot.
Yes, the Flames are thin on RW prospects, but to suggest that Horak is a solution to that is really reaching.

There doesn't seem to a place for Horak on this team. This should have been the year he earned a roster spot but didn't. Like, how long should we wait?
Brossoit would have been a loss if we didn't have a surplus of goaltending prospects. If Gilles pans and one of Berra or Ramo sticks with the Flames, no one will be talking about Brossoit.

Horak is a victim of bad luck really IMO. The organization acquired a lot of centre depth this summer right as he was set to break in.
At the very end of last season it looked like he'd be pencilled in as our #3 centre behind Backlund and Stajan. But then we traded for and signed Knight. And then we drafted Monahan. And then we traded for Colborne. So he was currently behind Stajan, Backlund, Monahan, Colborne and then fighting with Reinhart, Knight, Jones, and Byron for time in the AHL and for a spot in the NHL.
I like Horak. Brossoit has some potential. They aren't nothing. I still think Horak will be a 3rd line C/W. But we did deal from a position of strength and neither guy was a key guy for us.

I believe Hanowski plays RW, and I think Gaudreau was on the right side at least part of the time during the WJHCs last year for the US. Reinhart was even playing RW last night.
The Flames definitely have a lack of right-handed shots throughout the organization (but, like they say, the Russian Red Army used to be all left-handed shots). Horak is a lefty too, so that doesn't really change anything.
