Although the Flames just started their "blow- it- up project" at last years' trade deadline, they appear to be years ahead of the Oilers in the rebuild. What gives?

MrBung terryfhoan hour ago•10
Incompetent management and clueless ownership. Katz's part of the brain that involves making decisions about the Oilers must be filled with his curly hair and floor plans for the new arena.

I'm counting 51. So yea, I'm guessing it's 50http://capgeek.com/oilers

Now that I've had time to think, I'm still mad about trading Horak since I like the kid and wanted to see him on the team because he was such a hard worker, but seeing how much rage he's bringing Oilers fan, I'm like him even more. Hopefully the Oilers don't qualify him in the summer and he can go to another team so I can cheer for him again and enjoy how he's been involved in two trades where the Flames have absolutely bent over the other team involved.

I like Brossoit as a prospect and he has the potential to be a good NHL goalie (though I think it's a longshot). However, the Oilers are going to rush him. They will want to see him in the NHL ASAP in order to make the trade look good.

Brossoit will probably have a couple good games, but in the end, rushing him could ruin him. That would be very unfortunate (with respect to him)

Never mind Flames trades. After 1 day this has to go down as one of the most lop-sided un-explainable trades ever.

The Sabres had to take Kotalik's contract on the Regehr - Butler trade.

Maybe the Leafs getting Cody Franson for Lebda because they took Lombardi's salary is close but at least you could see that Lombardi had negative value.

This trade indicates that to 28 other GMs Smid had basically zero or negative value.

What could other teams be offering for Smid? 3rd / 4th round picks?

Or the only other teams interested didn't have the cap space to take on Smid

51 signed contracts, but 2 are ELCs that have slid, so they're officially at 49: http://capgeek.com/oilers/reserve-list/

I'm sure that's why Roy was included in the deal. I doubt he's in the long-term plans for the Flames (although, I don't think Ortio was either at the end of last season, so a strong performance can change minds).

With the Bryz signing and the Bro for Roy swap, they have 7 goalies under contract.

so we can say the for Bouwmeester's 6.7 M we filled in with Russell 1.5, Smid 3.5 and Colbourne .6, Berra .85 as well as Poirier and Cundari and have a few bucks left over.

with Smid and Russell we have the answer to the oft ask question as to how will the Flames ever replace the tough minutes that Bouwmeester plays.

Actually he is pretty specific about how things played out. That's more of a breakdown than one typically hears. Not sure what the issue is

Feaster said Smid can play a lot of minutes which will take a load off their top-four group of Dennis Wideman, Kris Russell, T.J. Brodie, and Chris Butler who are playing well over 20 minutes a night. The club is also missing captain Mark Giordano, likely until Christmas, with a broken ankle. Their bottom pairing consists of Shane O’Brien (who played with Smid in Portland during the 2005-06 American Hockey League season), Derek Smith and recent call-up Chad Billins.

“We felt we had to get better and that was prior to the time of Mark Giordano getting hurt,” Feaster said. “You look at it now, our bottom pairing, our five-six, they’re only playing about 10 minutes a game. It’s a taxing situation on our other guys.

“With Smid, we feel it’s a guy who can come in and play big minutes, he’s a guy that can kill penalties. But really, what it does for us, it gives the coaching staff options.”
Quote:
Feaster said they considered a deal prior to Giordano’s injury.

“We looked at it and felt we needed to improve the mix of our six,” he said. “Even before Gio got hurt, the other four, even though they weren’t necessarily playing as many minutes as they are now. It was still a limited role for the guys in the five-six (spot). I felt that if we were going to improve that, we were going to try and do it.

“Certainly, Giordano’s injury makes this a more timely addition and we’re happy to be able to do it ... I said welcome to the Battle of Alberta from the other side.”

I like the moves made since Burke arrived on the scene. I don't know how hands on he is, but the Flames seem to be moving ahead with a plan now. The plan seems to be to get bigger and tougher and better, which may mean some of our smaller players could be moved.

Good. Does that make Feaster's quote any better? I disagree. It still sucks.

I'm sure it has been mentioned, but it's pretty funny seeing Smid go from being a young defenseman acquired as a future piece for a rebuild to a veteran traded away for future pieces in the same rebuild 7 years later.

Feaster talked about how the trade went down and later addressed why the trade was made. He addressed both situations quite well IMO

He went through the timing if the deal and even how edmonton backed off at one point. What exactly are you upset about?

Smid on the trade'

Quote:
Smid had been leading the Oilers in hits (52) and blocked shots (34) — and, yes, he is already a wearer of (Flames-mandated) ankle guards.

“I don’t think I could play without them,” chuckled Smid, who’s expected to add much-needed sandpaper to Calgary’s blue line. “I hope that’s why they got me. I’m going to work really hard for that team. Hopefully, I can get the respect from the new teammates.”
Quote:
Perhaps Burke, the Flames’ president of hockey operations, had a say in Friday’s trade?

“You’re going to have to ask him,” said Smid, laughing. “He knows me from Anaheim, but that’s really a question for him.”
Quote:
“Obviously, I was in shock for a while,” said Smid. “It was a lot of mixed feelings ... but I talked to my wife. She’s excited. I’m excited. We are focused on a new beginning with a new organization. Just pumped to join the Flames.”
