According to Calgarypuck Horak was our #11th best prospect. Brossoit was our 17th best prospect.

Horak failed to make the team out of camp, so I bet if a poll was made earlier this week his stock would of been lower then 11th.

Ortio wasn't even in the top 27 ranked prospects and out performed Brossoit with the Heat.

Don't know where you are getting that from. Horak while popular was rarely seen as a big piece of the future. When most posters made up their future lineups, Horak would always be forgotten or left out. Plus, he's had 3 good cracks at full time NHL employment on a team desperate for centers and hasn't been able to stick.

As for Broissoit, all the goalie hype from Flames fans has been about Gillies.

After all the rudiculing of Oilers defense it is truly amazing to read that their fourth best Dman is all in sudden a top 4 Dman and good asset. He saw less time on ice and, more interestingly, less PK time than 34 years old Andrew Ference, who even in his prime was third-pairing Dman.

You evaluate players based on how much icetime a horrible NHL coach gives them?

Many would argue that Smid was their best Dman, at least defensively. I believe he was also their leader in hits and blocked shots. If he gives us a solid 5-6 we win the trade, if he cracks 3-4 that would be gravy.

Do you imply that you have better hockey sense and better read on Smid, than actual NHL coach, who sees him every day? Are you better-than-horrble NHL coach or something?

Anyone else see a bunch of their oil buddies looking like the kid who just had his lunch money stolen?

I really like the deal even though I am a big Horak supporter. I still think Horak has 3rd maybe even 2nd line potential. I do agree with the posters who say our depth allows us to deal him with guys like Knight and Reinhart close and Backlund, Colborne and Monahan on the team.

In Smid we get a guy who I've liked when I watched the Oil. He's a defensive D-man but I think he could be able to play a bigger role than Sarich, Warrener and O'Brien had/have. Our defense badly needed another guy who could play top 4 if needed and has some size and defensive ability. Smid isn't a big hitter but when I've watched him he has more sandpaper to his game than I thought he did.

Brossoit I thought was the most expendable of our goalie prospects. Without looking it up I think I had him as our lowest ranked goalie when I made my list in a prospect thread this summer. Obviously he's still got a lot of potential and I think he's a decent prospect but after Ortio's year last year, Gillies' year last year and the more mature Berra and Ramo I think we just didn't really have room for Laurent.

Roy I'm not a big fan of from when I've watched him in junior. I didn't think his style and size combination is one that translates easily to the NHL. So for me that part of the deal is a definite downgrade as I like Brossoit considerably more than Roy. I'm a big believer in size being a massive plus in goal. Gillies and Berra are my favourites of our bunch

We traded two expendable prospects at positions we were fairly deep in. And this coming from a Horak fan who still likes him quite a bit. I think he'll do well in Edmonton. But I think we got tremendous value for Horak in Smid. And we traded for the position that we were immediately weakest in.

Obviously the bonus is that the Oil are weak on defense as well so dealing Smid seems to make them immediately worse. Seems Bryzgalov could upgrade their tending but their defense presumably needs a shakeup as well. My boss thinks a forward for defense trade is on the horizon for the Oil.

I like that we didn't give up any picks. Gonna be interesting to ask my Oilers friend what he thinks of it.

I sympathize with Bryzgalov. Team D play makes people suspect Mike Smith was in the conversation for top goalies while Kiprusoff was not.

Funny thing about history repeating itself. Khabibulin was brought in by the Oil after having succeeded against Calgary in the playoffs. As did Bryzgalov. Long ago.

After thinking about it since gut my instinct kicked in, I'm ok with this trade. We got Monahan, Coburn, Knight, Backlund and Reinhart as future centre depth, and we have a glut of future goalies in Ramo, Berra, Ortio and Gillies

Smid is still relatively young (27), is solid defensively and helps fill a void with Gio hurt. He is definitely an upgrade over Smith

The reaction they're having at Oilfans tells me this was a good trade.

Since I've made probably half dozen posts hoping Feaster/Burke would find us a veteran D man for cheap somehow, I can't complain A 27-year old defensive D-man easily has 5 years of good game in him, maybe even a decade. This was a solid deal.

Too bad seeing Horak go, but it was pretty clear this guy wasn't getting anywhere in Calgary. At least in Edmonton he'll have a lot of young millionaire drinking buddies to drown his sorrows...

I hope this pushes O'Brien out of the lineup.

So basicly:
Giordano-Brodie
Wideman-Russell
Butler/Billins/Breen/Smith-Smid

I'd keep Wideman and Russell together, as two guys that like to both shoot and make plays have proved a rather effective combination.

For now, without Gio, that becomes
Wideman-Russell
Brodie-Butler
Billins-Smid (or Smith-Smid if you prefer.)

Having Smid gives us more options to cut down minutes on guys that are struggling, or maybe had to play crazy minutes the first night of a back-to-back. This is nice.

And maybe most importantly he'll get a ton of PK time. Right now with Giordano out it's been Wideman, Brodie, Butler and Russell making up the PK units. It's no surprise they are 2nd last in the league when it comes to killing off penalties (surprisingly it's Chicago in dead last). Wont be shocked to see him get up to 4 minutes a night on particularly whistle-happy days. So even if he does get stuck playing on the bottom pairing, first it should allow Hartley to play the bottom pairing a bit more, but his PK time should end up bringing him to a respectable 18-20 minutes a night I would think.

I don't know. Greg Gilbert had a pretty good read on Marc Savard, right? Some coaches just take a dislike to certain players for reasons unbeknownst to us. Some dislike certain players while loving others. It is a head scratcher at times. I mean, who in their right mind would play Jackman as much as Hartley does???
