Why mess with Wideman-Russel tandem? I think Smid will start playing with Brodie until Gio comes back. Then you will see him play with rotation of Butler and O'Brien.

Actually kind of hoping that they dont break up the Russell and Wideman pairing.
Smid could bring Balance to a third pairing with /puke Butler, Or even better yet, next year with Seiloff or Ramage or Wotherspoon. One of them will win a roster slot next year.
This is actually boiling down to a downright great deal in terms of mentorship and leadership for the youngins coming up to the major leagues.

Are Horak and Broissoit small and soft enough to fit in on the Oilers?

I think it has more to do with being opportunistic and capitalizing on another team doing strange things. Any time you can improve on a long term basis it is a good thing. Smid is definitely young enough to be a solid 3/4/5 for the next handful of years while we figure out the whole D prospect pool. It's sort of like replacing Sarich with a younger version of that type of guy.

Also was told by a buddy of mine who happens to be an Edmonton fan that Smid is the one almost always on the ice when they complete the blowing of a lead. Essentially our Butler. Pretty sure he's just trying to cover up the tears.

last year he would have been here. We added Monahan, Colborne, and knight in the off season. That knocked him down a few pegs while still having to compete with the reinharts and granlunds. Another wave of prospects to compete with coming from college. Then there is the draft. He didn't have a place anymore.

Eakins would have seen Horak a few times in the AHL. The guy does have NHL skill, just not sure what position or role he really fits into. He is a smart hockey player though. Something the Oilers could use.

Not quite the same thing, but I seem to recall several years ago, the Oilers claimed someone off waivers from us (or was it the other way around).
For the life of me, I can't recall who it was.

Well that's kind of my point.
Stajan, Backlund, Monahan, Colborne, Knight is not a murderer's row up the middle.
If he can't win a place there, he's probably just not NHL calibre which makes it dumb to trade for him.

Also forgot to mention I really like this from the angle of using our excess cap room wisely.
Oilers had no choice to unload a contract for basically nothing in order to make room for Bryz. I think we'll see at least one more of this type of deal for us this year as anyone in the same sort of situation as Edmonton will probably be looking in our direction first.

Well, you also have to add that the Flames are likely going to pick in the top ten.
If that's true, the current top ten prospects are 5 C, one LW, two RW, and a pair of D men. It more likely that the Flames are going to get one of the 5 centers (Reinhart/Nylander/Dal Colle/Bennett/Virtanen) just pushing Horak further down.

Horak's also an RFA at the end of this season and only a few NHL games away from losing his waiver-exempt status.

Matt Lombardi and Jarret Stoll reentered the draft and essentially switched teams IIRC
