Not the biggest fan of this quote, and hope that it's just due to the language gap.
He needs to understand that when he is benched it is an opportunity to learn. That he gets to watch the game from a different vantage point to better understand what he needs to do on the ice to be successful.

The pattern I see with Hartley is that when a skilled player is not producing enough, he cuts ice time and plays him with Jackman. Happened to Cervenka, happened to Sven last year, happened to Backlund, and now it's happening to Monohan.
I just can't understand why that isn't working out. Could there possibly conceivably be any other way to get these guys producing?? Not qualified to say I guess because I'm not an NHL coach.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sven goes to Feaster and asks for a trade.

Jackman won't be in the top 9, I am guessing he'll get 3 minutes with that group the entire game and a few shifts on the 4th line, by halfway through the first, Renihart will be on that 3rd line.
But, it's listed that way so that Reinhart doesn't all of a sudden just step in and consider himself and by others to be a 3rd liner and jump some of the other players. Ironic with the meritocracy, is it not?
Hartley doing things his way for better or worse. When it comes down to it, the situation is up for Burke to decide between the two involved, if Hartley's tactics are beneficial/deterimental in the short term and/or long term with the message it sends to Sven, the team, the other younger prospects on and off the big roster etc.
And, on a much broader scale, who's got more pull and thus which of Sven or Hartley is going to be here longer.

...what is wrong with what he said here? That is literally what he does during a game when he's scratched.
I can't believe anyone could draw negative conclusions from these quotes.

And the bad coaching show continues in Calgary.
Nobody in their right mind would play Jackman with Sean and Jiri given tonight's lineups.
Rebuilding or winning, Sven should be playing tonight in place of Jackman.
Indeed Hartley is really not that good of a coach.
That stacked Avs team leaded him, he did not lead them, to the Stanley Cup.
And perhaps he was indeed the catalyst behind that miserable Atlanta.
We were only excited about Hartley because we have been stuck with something worse in the name of Brent for so freaking long.
That was why Hartley started out so refreshing, especially playing a totally opposite blend of offensive hockey.
However, I think he is finally starting to show his major flaws.
Allow me to be one of the first to say it.
I want Hartley to get out of town ASAP.

I don't think that quote is a big deal. Of course it sucks to sit out, especially when youre a player who's not used to it. I have no doubt that Sven is taking this the proper way. I think it is misguided on Hartley's part though. Especially with Glencross out now.

I'm sure that quick quote doesn't encompass his entire philosophy on the situation.

He showed that in his play (cross checking an opposing Flames prospect in the throat after they checked him) and showed it in his interviews stating that this camp was nothing, main camp was everything. I believe even saying he didn't prepare for Prospect Camp at all.
Same thing happened when he showed up for the Rookie/Young Stars games and camp. You could see in the game against the UofC that he was not happy to be there. He felt he was above this and that playing with the other prospects was insulting to his abilities.
Last year when Hartley demoted him, he took it hard and brought that entitlement attitude to Abbotsford with him. The team had to pull him out of his funk in order to get production out of him. If he truly was a professional, he would have pulled up his big boy pants, gone to Abbotsford and tore up the AHL so he could figuratively give the middle finger to the Flames and show he doesn't belong in the AHL.
I don't think Sven is a victim of anything other then his own notions of how he should be treated. I do think we have a borderline prima donna on our hands and Hartley is trying to correct the problem before it gets out of control. I don't see this whole Hartley monster the majority seem to try to make him out to be. I'm seeing more of a stern father where he will put his foot up your ass if you need it. I think that's what this is so that Sven can start getting himself back in the right direction.

Great sum up of his problems the past year. He needs to remember what got him to the spot he is today. When we drafted him, during the first prospect camp and from his Portland coach all we would hear is the awesome attitude this kid had, how he was the hardest working player out there, would stay out on the ice until he got kicked off. He had the attitude needed to be an NHL star. He was a kid who had a permanent smile on his face, even when they were working the rest of the prospects to the bone, he was still smiling and looking like nothing was fazing him.
We don't hear anything about this type of attitude from him anymore. For one reason or another, his experience so far in the NHL has changed his passion a little, and he needs to find that love for the game again.
Here's what I'm hoping. Well first, he finds this spark again with the Flames. But saying that doesn't happen, I'm hoping he finds it with Team Switzerland in the Olympics. I have a little hunch that a trip over to Sochi will be just what he needs to find his confidence again, and he will come back a totally new player, the one we saw with the Winterhawks.

I think what Hartley and the coaches are trying to get him to do is play a better 200 foot game. When he is in the press box, he should be watching certain players, seeing what they do well and what to avoid doing. You don't just watch the game like we do on TV. He should be taking notes on what he needs to do at his next practice in order to get into the next game. If he's just up there eating popcorn and tweeting (I'm not saying he actually is doing this), then he's going to find himself up there much more often.

Well at least I know I don't have to turn the game on tonight. Another night of watching Jackman and McGrattan flail around isn't what I would call entertaining

I know he is being literal and just being honest and open but it all just sounds very negative from Sven.
"When you are scratched you just sit around and watch". That doesn't sound negative at all to you?
No accountability, no mentioning it is an opportunity to watch the game and learn from a different view point. Nothing about understanding what he has to do better to get back in the lineup.
It just feels to me like he is falling into that same negative mindset that he had after being send down last season. (www2.canada.com/calgaryherald/iphone/news/latest/story.html?id=8208963)
And for the record I hate this #FreeSven and #FreeBacklund B.S. They want to get back in the line up then they have to prove that they earn it.
And everything goes into that, how they play in practice, how the react after being benched, their performance over the next stretch of games. We just got rid of the sense of entitlement this team seemed to have, let's not go and build that attitude again.
I think this is the wrong decision from Hartley tonight but Baertschi needs to realized that this isn't Hartley just picking on him and that his play and response has played a role in his treatment over the last 12-18 months.

Good I hope it pisses him off so he gets a hattie his next game out and forces Hartely to never make this decision again.

There is a quick fix for this problem.
Feaster can trade Backlund for Rattie to play with Baertschi and then he can trade Baertschi for Berglund to play with Backlund.

It's really just not that one little quote, it is a culmination of things over the last year and it worries me that he has a sense of entitlement building and that he cannot see that he is accountable for what is happening.
My concerns started with his reaction to being sent down last season.
It grew with him not being happy with having to attend development and rookie camp.
And now I am not overly fond of how he seems to be handling his benching.

Now that's what I wanted read. Good.
I don't want to read "Ya it sucks cause I just sit around and watch."
See how 2 quotes from the same person can mean so much to everyone. Got to love the English language.
