What we're doing with Backlund is a mistake. I don't want to see the future repeat itself.

St. Louis credited Brian Sutter for making him defensively sound. I know that rings hollow right now, but Backlund is still with the team. He wasn't traded for and wasn't signed as an undrafted player either.

Okay so how many chances does Backlund need?
He was handed 1st line Center duties a couple years ago and was never able to step up in the role. That is why we have guys like Stajan still around. Backlund has never made the next step.
In fact, when has Backlund ever played his way into a larger position? All this talk about ice time not being earned, but Backlund has never taken advantage of opportunities when they were given to him.

Difference is Butler has a much longer track record of being horrible.

So Feaster and Hartley are responsible for what Craig Button and Greg Gilbert/Don Hay/Brian Sutter did?
And now Backlund is on the level of Savard and St. Louis?
Get a grip. Put down the bottle. Step away from the keyboard.

FWIW, a look at advanced stats show Backlund head and shoulders above Colborne in effectiveness.
Backlund iFenwick: 24 (3rd best on the team)
Colborne iFenwick: 6 (tied for worst on the team)

I see the morons are out in full force tonight.
Frankly, if you want to overreact and throw people off the team, send Brodie packing too. That is two games in a row that the game-winning goal was scored because he made a stupid pass attempt that was immediately turned over.

Did you think Savard had 97 point potential in 2003? St. Louis with Art Ross potential?
Well, obviously the Flames didn't.

Look, the team hasn't given up on Backlund. You're not happy with his minutes? That's fair as well. If this was a win, a lot of what you're feeling wouldn't be so extreme.
On the other hand, there's a team up the #2 that plays their young guys 20+ minutes a night and they suck worse than Calgary does.
All I know is, Bob Hartley > Brent Sutter. The rest of the chips will fall as they may.

Hartley is more positive, but he's not a better coach.
