Ok, you believe that. It's Burke, and that's fine, if the President of Hockey Ops has a guy he wants to take a flyer on, that's totally cool. However, he did not earn the minute increases he was getting.

Brodie is playing against the best players in the world on a nightly basis.
If you are to play him in those situations you have to take the good with the bad. For the most part tonight I though he handled the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg wonderfully. One botched pass led to a goal, but Joey MacDonald simply has to be better on that play and be there for his young defensemen.
Simply put... the goaltending tonight (and the entire season for that matter) has just not been good enough. When both of your goaltenders sit below an .890SV% it is no wonder that our "small" mistakes as Kerr likes to call continuously end up in the back of our net.
It is Reto Berra time.

Again, the only reason is bias. He's Burke's player.
|
And Colborne it better. He's bigger, stronger on the puck, stands in front of the net and simply looks like a player that can have a bigger impact in the future. He's been unlucky in the past couple of games not to have two or three goals. Backlund has some skill but it seems the game is just too fast for him sometimes and if he's not going 100% he doesn't get much of anything done.

You must be looking pretty hard, I didn't see any obvious ones tonight other than not finishing some offensive chances. Put the rest of the team in that category tonight.

Ya kidding.. Neither Butler nor Brodie will ever get sat.. They're integral to our giveaways and goals against.. Who will take their place?? Did you at all think of these important points This team seems to sit other players.

Again, I keep hearing that Colborne is stronger... he's not.
He has a big body. That's all. He doesn't use it to his advantage.
Physically, Colborne has the tools to be a good NHLer. But he doesn't have the hands, the IQ, and the defence of Backlund.
Colborne is a passive hockey player. He's at his best when you don't notice him.

And the little fact he has only been in Hartleys system for about 4 weeks.
Yes, Backlund DOES have a different level of accountability on this team than a guy who joined them a month ago.

I've had high hops for Backlund for a very long time. However, since drafting him, be it by injuries or confidence or whatever, he has never lived up to the player I thought he could be.
So frustrating, he shows flashes of brilliance, but most of the time is barely noticeable.
Maybe I am not seeing what others are, but I have had no problem with his ice time getting cut down.

Shot attempts with Backlund on the ice at ES tonight? +13 -1. But, yeah, bench that dude.
Every single statistic says that Hartley is acting like an idiot.

I don't think you can look at those players in the same role for "futures".
They have said they want Colborne to be a 3rd line center. They said the same thing when they picked up Knight. It looks like they want a big center for the 3rd line.
I think they want Backlund as a 2nd line center going forward. Nothing that he has done this year has shown he is a 2nd line center. He needs to pick it up, the job is his to lose. I don't see the Flames wanting him as a 3rd line center going forward.

I agree, but Brodie has made at least 1 or 2 turnovers that ended up in the back of our net for 4-5 games in a row. I just think he needs a night off to get his head straight and calm down out there.
I also think Billins deserves a chance to see if he's any better. He's still young and could be a piece of the future, so I would favor him over Brodie at this current moment.
I also don't want to punish a player for making mistakes, but he's made too many in a row now and needs a shakeup.

So Backlund misuse aside, why does this coaching staff keep putting the same ineffective PP units out there?

I don't mind Colborne, but he doesn't have half the skill, hockey IQ, and play making ability Backlund has. Backlund literally gift wrapped a goal that Camellari missed tonight.

FWIW, the PP is 0 for its last 18.
But yeah, good idea to give Baertschi 15 seconds at the end of every PP opportunity to try and create some chances

Yep and that's why I don't follow Wilson. Didn't he want Butler run out of town a few weeks ago? Butler has actually filled in very admirably for Giordano actually outplaying Brodie. Wilson is one of us that sits all day looking at obscure stats. His opinion means nothing more to me than anyone else's here. Fan opinion only as he's an authority on nothing NHL.
