I don't care where he plays as long as it's not here.
You need good defensive defensemen to win championships, and between him and Wideman, I'd take Wideman every day of the week. Actually, in all aspects of their games I'd take Wideman.

More then that... but not much more. Wideman got 5.25M per for 5 years and I don't think Phaneaf is that much better then Wideman (If even at all).

Burke's foolishness lead to this. Name a guy captain and you're legitimizing their leadership qualities as essential for your team's success. That's worth as much as numbers are.

At the same cap I would take Phaneuf over Wideman 9 times out of 10

Well that was obvious, the owners caved on everything. Very different from the previous lockout.

Well Wideman was a UFA and is a better player over all.

FYP.
The top 2 tiers of players are the ones reaping the benefits from this. The big name guys are getting huge, unsustainable deals and guys like Hudler getting 4-6 million, but the guys at the lower end (the ones who this money should actually be allocated to since they are the ones making the least while staying in the league for the least amount of time) are seeing their value decrease. When teams spend 1/4 of their salary cap on 2-3 players, how can they afford to pay their bottom guys (who are just as important to team success) what they're worth?
It's bad asset management to give these big deals IMO. You may think you're holding onto a star player, but does anyone really expect Parise or Suter to play like 7+ mil players for over a decade? Especially when their already halways through their prime? It makes no sense. And if guys like Suter can't hold that up, does anyone really expect Phaneuf to play at that level for the next 7 years? Does anyone think he's actually worth that TODAY, much less 7 years from now?
Guys like Widemen and Giordano (amongst a plethora of good but "no name" defensemen across the league) bring exactly what Phaneuf can bring and more for less dough.

But you're not going to get that, are you? CG is right, Wideman makes Phaneuf redundant on this roster.

As a Flames fan, hoping that the Leafs get this deal done fast!

Phaneuf is actually looking really good early in this season. Looks like a real #1 Defenceman.

He's looked like a #1 defenseman for 2+ years now. Maybe longer when you think about that calf laceration that put him out for an extended period.
Clearly we hate him and can debate his value all we want, but he has been a #1 D in this league for a long time now.

Not sure why this would be a number that people don't expect
Right in line with market value going forward, keep in mind cap is increasing
Is he worth it? Probably not

No I haven't. I watch the Leafs almost as much as the Flames (brother's a Leafs fan). He's a brutal hockey player.

i don't know how you guys are assessing dions play - i mean, the leafs, are rarely on TV in these parts. You can't just watch the tSN highlight reel and decide this guy is worth $X and that guy is worth $Y.....you need to see them a lot, before making a propoer valuation.

His play in front of the net in the game when the Bruins beat out the Leafs last year is enough to knock off at least 1 mil/year for me.

One of the stupidest things I've read in the past few weeks.
Unless if by "brutal" you actually meant one the best at his position in the world, if that's the case, we're definatley on the same page.

I'm not sure I would call every Saturday + a TSN game sprinkled in here and there as "rarely"
