Yikes if true. I wouldn't want him for 7 more years.
5 years at $6 million would make more sense to me.

He's not taking less than he's making now, when he's been playing up to the value of that contract for close to three years now.

I'd take him back here in a heartbeat. Nobody from those old teams is around except Cammi, and I feel like he'd get along with Dion.

^ Despite our D situation I would not want him. Not to mention he has not figured out how to :
- Hit the net
- Keep shots under 4 feet

Guys hate going to the net when a laser beam is coming in head high.

Not to mention that he still has to figure out how to Defend instead of going out of his way for the huge hit

Wow, $5.5-$6M max is what I'd peg him to be worth, not $7M, and not for that long of a contract. Fingers crossed that the Leafs actually do sign him for that much. I can see them getting burned by this by the 4th or 5th year of this contract.

Well I called it the day the lockout ended and I'll say it again. Players win. Again. Nice work Bettman. I see a 55 million dollar cap floor next season.

Phaneuf might be the worst "top pairing" defenceman in the league. Anything more than 4 mil per year is over payment in my opinion.

Pinder had a good take this AM asking what exactly this guy did well.

He doesn't defend. He is above average physically, above average offensively, plays lots of minutes, isn't an amazing leader.

There really isn't anything outstanding in his game that would cause me to pay the dollars.

I've changed my mind. I don't want to have 7 years worth of Dion arguments. Re-sign with the Leafs. Don't come out west.

with the cap likely going to $80M+ in a couple years, a $7M AAV will be typical of top 25-35 players not just the top 5-10 of each position

I dont think you understand how the the CBA works.

Player salaries are a fixed percentage of revenue. If the salary cap climbs, it is only because higher revenues have pulled it in that direction. Bettman and the owners would obviously welcome this.

Lol. No they didnt. It might seem that way cause you are seeing guys like Phaneuf get insane amounts of cash thrown their way, but that is only because it is more visible than the owner you've never heard of who's net gains are not published all over the internet.

Bettman may be a condescending prick but he works very hard for the owners and does a great job for them.

It seems like a bit much for Phaneuf but it would be very hard to convince him he needs to take a pay cut. His numbers just aren't that bad even if he is a bit suspect defensively.
