But, but, but it'll burn a year off his ELC and it's poor asset management.

If Monahan continues this outstanding level of play and Feaster/Burke, Hartley are going into game 9 there is no doubt Monahan has proven he is NHL ready and will only get better and better with more NHL experience.
He has been a catalyst to the team. Provided plays that matter at both ends of the ice.
If Monahan is sent down and he is in the top 3 for points i will truly question their intentions to be competitive and truly put the "best" product on the ice for this season.
We were discussing Monahan at the game last night and i ask the Flames just 1 simple question is there a better Center iceman in Abbotsford than Monahan.
The answer is clearly no. Not to mention he is the most productive Center on the Flames team.

Usually a team is afraid to keep a talented Jr eligible kid up because they are a step behind or they made the team but can't crack the top 6.
They can not use that excuse with Monahan. He has been a offensive difference maker so far every game.
They will look like asses if they send him down, they have to put their ego's aside and realize they are not burning a year of his contract if the kid is directly contributing to the Flames success and Nobody with a rational hockey mind can argue he isn't.
In fact Monahan is making his line mates better.

Screw the contract thoughts, if he's ready he's ready, and he looks like he's ready. You take that weight off of his shoulders of being sent to juniors and watch out.
I agree with both the snarky voice and the comment about him being ready, play him. Especially since in the past few seasons we have seen some very reasonable bridge contracts signed by younger players. It isn't such a heart break to "waste" a year of that ELC when we aren't a cap team. Depending on where we are around Christmas they could always give him leave to go play in the WJ's as well.

7 points in 1 game against the Oilers! I will accept Canucks, Leafs, Avs, Blackhawks and Habs.

The only reason to put a player back in juniors who earned a spot on the roster is long term development. If he's better off in juniors, you keep him in juniors, if he's better off in the NHL, you keep him in the NHL.

The burning a year on his ELC shouldn't play a role. Yeah, it might be nice for cap concerns in 4 years but what type of message does it send long term? "Hey Monahan, you're doing great in the NHL. Obviously a large part was your extensive off-season training and hard work you've put in since being drafted...But we don't want to worry about how much we pay you in year 4 so we're going to send you back down to juniors and instead of potentially making over a million dollars this year you'll get your $200 dollar a week stipend instead. Oh but when it comes to re-signing you in year 4 hopefully you take a discount with us and/or sign long term because of the loyalty you owe us."

Same with 2 way contracts and waiver eligibility. At this point I think it's important to have the players on the team who played their way onto the team if it doesn't affect their development. Best message to send throughout the organization going forward.

Before we make the call on whether to send him back, compare his home vs away performance. With final change, Hartley can put him in situations where he is more likely to succeed. The away games where he may be targeted by opposing teams are also an important measure.

For me, I want him to be in the spot where he gets the most icetime in key situations. Whether here or there, I want him to have the chance to continue to develop. The taste of the pro game and what he wants to work on will benefit either situation.

Who do you replace Monahan with if you send him down? Hudler and Stempniak have also had great chemistry with him, too. I let Baertschi-Monahan figure things out this season and see what happens.

Plus with D. Jones injury, we're going to be calling someone up, not sending someone down. I'm thinking Hanowski gets the nod.

About the number of seconds in 82 regular time games.

They're getting third line ice-time, but it's quality ice-time. And it doesn't hurt that they have a lot of speed and have the opposing line on their heels.

Default Sean FRICKIN Monahan

Beyond excited about this kid. I'll be shocked if Feaster is even still debating sending him back down. He could drop the ball in the next 5 games, but right now it'd be silly to send him down

His development is here. Dominating in the OHL sounded like a great idea at the start of the year… but at this point I think he'd be bored. Calgary is excited and the NHL is noticing, and hell, even TSN is saying nice things! It'd be a team and marketing disaster to send him down. Ken King has surely sounded off on this too.

That being said, the most important element of Monahan staging up has been determined: I picked him up in my fantasy

I don't think there's a question that Monahan has earned his stay so far. My question is how many people would be comfortable keeping him past the nine games, but possibly sending him down later if his play noticably slips? That's the real risk with losing the year off the ELC. I'm one who really doesn't care about a year off his ELC at all, but I know a lot do.

I'm buying MONOs jersey. I hope he doesn't change his number next season is Blair jones isn't retained. Someone on here was mentioning that he wears 19 usually... But I like 23... Greatest of all times number (obviously not hockey haha).

I don't think that's the case. He could be loaned for the WJC, but he would be in the NHL for the season as I understand it. No return to Ottawa or assignment to Abbotsford would be possible for the 13-14 season.

I dont think the ECL is a big deal. So what, he excels and we pay him sooner. We have lots of cap space and will likely have more once a couple vets get dealt. When this team is ready to compete (hopefully) we will likely have other players still on their ELC (Poirier, Klimchuck, Gaudreau). So If Monahan, Sven, Brodie etc. are getting higher salaries it still shouldnt get us in cap trouble.
