It was a terrible play by McGrattan, but it's McGrattan, he should never be on the ice on purpose against the top line when the team is up by 1. And Butler, like normal, is imploding defensively, so you keep putting him out? Butler wasn't having an off-game and needed to play through it, this is Butler. Hartley gift wrapped the Canucks 2 points in a very winnable game after a great effort by most of the team. I don't see Burke putting up with Hartley long, maybe that's just wishful thinking.
As for the players, most disappointed in Glencross tonight but, all things consider, pretty happy with the actual play - could see the effort.

Seriously? Hartley has THIS roster playing THIS well and you're attacking him?
Sorry, but no - that's ridiculous.

One thing I noticed... Hartley said he didn't want to name any bad players tonight during the post-game press conference, yet the entire team had no problem singling out Baertschi and only Baertschi a week ago. Seems that the mistakes of rookies are amplified whereas other players get a pass.
According to Steinberg, Baertschi and Monahan were +2 and +3 in scoring chance differential tonight.

I am not a big fan of management intervening with coaching. But every so often a coach gets attached to a guy they shouldn't. Street should not be leading the forwards in PP time, playing in OT, and getting almost 18-minutes in a night.
|
I think Street had been pretty reliable when it comes to his play so far this season. I'll agree that he probably shouldn't be leading the team in power-play minutes but that comes with playing on the top line with Glencross and Jones. Another consideration of it could be to keep the Hudler Backlund Galuardi line together as it has been the best line we have had this season so far

Flames are playing the right way. Finally. Unfortunately with their lack of high end talent they need to play mistake-free hockey to win and they didn't do that.
Glencross, McGrattan and Wideman with the brain farts tonight and unfortunately all three ended up in the net.
Which coach is in charge of the defense? It's still a bit of a fire drill back there. Breakouts need work badly.
Would be nice to even win in OT/SO around 50% of the time. Flames haven't been strong in that area for years now. Strange.
Not impressed at all by the canucks. They'll make the playoffs but that's a team on the decline right there.

"we" dont.
Why would you want to add a "me first" guy into what looks like its a solid dressing room full of young guys?
Could derail all the good work Feaster and crew have done on this do-over with a move like that.

That was a fun game to be at. Exciting to watch, but a disappointing 3rd period.

Bryz has been called a cancer by many of his former teammates... we can't bring a guy like that here.
Goaltending hasn't been superb, but truly it's the least of my worries right now.
Now, defence, however...

Thought we played hard and well. Vancouver only scored because of huge mistakes by our players. We controlled play a lot. Wideman with a ridiculous play in overtime, glencross with a terrible giveaway, and mcgrattan with another awful turnover.
I thought Glencross was really bad.
Sean monahan played his best game his -2 is not deserving at all.
Hartley is doing a bad job managing the bench and the line match ups and lines. Ben street on the top line playing against the Sedin's? Really dumb. Then on the power play not a center out, losing every draw and chasing from the get go.
Get glencross off the top power play and taking faceoffs.
Hudler really gives no effort very lazy player.
Last but not least, Chris butler is one of the worst hockey players have I watched. A terrible terrible player with 0 hockey iq, and no skill. The you pair him up with Shane obrien and you have a disastrous pair. Need to get rid of them both.

Wasn't it Burke that publicly singled out Baertschi?

I wish we could pick up a solid, veteran shut down guy to play on the 3-4 pairing so we can bump Russel to the 5-6 where he should be and Butler to the press box. Gio and Brodie are a decent 1-2 punch, but after that my trust and faith in this crop starts to crumble.
Get on it Burke/Feaster! Please..
Glencross really needs to get his head in the game ASAP. Letting the young kids down when he should be leading them!

I think our defence needs to be more focused during the game. The turnovers we saw in the third were mental errors that shouldn't be happening.

Glencross plays the game like it's his job. Like they did last year. Because they get paid millions to do it.
Meanwhile the kids that haven't cashed in play the game like it's meant to be played, with passion and respect for the dream they're living.
So I think that's a big difference. Glencross will get going eventually like always, but it just isn't interesting watching a guy not really care all that much. That's just the bottomline.

Not bad. But also: terrible.
This team can score, absolutely no doubt about it. Really impressed so far with the offensive capabilities of this team. Thing is, with having such a young team, you get mistakes but you also get guys who put in that extra effort to really try and make up for it. The unfortunate part about that (aside from the mistakes) is that it makes it all the more obvious who ISNT playing that way. Couple embarrassing mistakes by veterans, but what exactly is Glencross doing? The guy needs to step up and join the team. It's only been 3 games, but he's been passive, slow, careless, and almost looked lazy at times. I'm not going to overreact and say we need to ship him off or anything, but come on guy, you're supposedly to be one of the few dependable parts of this team and you're mailing it in. Get it together.

What's with the negative Nancy's in this thread, I love this team, I actually want to watch them play hockey this year unlike the last few.
We're probably not going to make the playoffs but who cares at least this team can be bothered to put in the effort unlike the teams of the last few years.
Funny enough it's the vets, aka glencross and mcgratton which are costing this team points.

I have my doubts about Glencross being a part of this team moving forward.

Then put the Hudler, Backlund, Galiardi line together on the PP. Hartley has a #1 PP unit without a C for a big chunk of the night, and when he does put a C on it he puts in Street. Meanwhile the Flames are 9.1% on the PP and our best forwards aren't getting any PP time.
I get Street has been reliable. But he hasn't generated chances our points. There is no justification for Street getting that amount of PP time in a game. Especially one where your PP sucks. Especially when your best forwards are available.
Like I said above, kudos for him getting what he has from the team. But some of his decisions are baffling.

Butler isn't very good (compared to other professional hockey players). That pairing was frightening every shift.
Brodie and Giordano are awesome.
Backlund rules. What a goal.
I like David Jones.
Joey MacDonald was pretty good. One soft goal, but it was from point blank range.
I think Monahan will go back to the O.

I don't think SOB looks that bad out there. Look who he's paired with. He's not that good to carry Butler, but he's a good 6th. Bring in Smith next game. I don't know what the coaches love about Butler. He's cost too many fans TVs from their remotes going through them! Put him on waivers I beg you!
