I wouldn't like it either. But if they really want to add size and toughness to the lineup and given Burke's quotes about Baertschi, I wouldn't be surprised if they grabbed him and sent Baertschi down to Abbotsford sending this board into riot mode.

If they feel Breen is NHL-ready once fit then Urbom might be redundant.
How do Breen & Urbom stack up? Which one has more upside? Which one plays more physical? I want a DESTROYER on this team.

The sense is that Breen took a big step forward last year, but I have never seen him being an NHL defender.. being injured through camp won't help his cause either.

I would be stunned if Urbom isn't claimed by Edmonton. I don't see the Flames doing anything till they see what they currently have.

I don't see how he fits on their current 23 man roster. I agree that they could use him, I just don't see how they do it

I really can't think the flames management don't already know they have the worst bottom 3 d-men in the league.

Hope we do. Urbom and Breen as a third pairing.

Breen would protect him.

all this talk of Breen is really odd and unfortunate because non of us have seen him play a regular season game. I know PMM and a few others love what he does down in Abby... but come on... lets just hop he can use his big body and make his way on the flames. my view on Breen (without ever watching him play) is an Adam Pardy esque but meaner type of defender

I don't think anybody is going overboard on what to expect from Breen. For myself I don't see the point in claiming Urbom when we have a similar player at a similar point of development. I kinda hope Breen will get in a couple of games before deciding to keep him or send him down, that's all. Maybe he can replace Smith as he does fit our needs better.

Anybody know what time they announce waiver claims?
Got a feeling that the Flames put in a waiver claim for Urbom. Conroy said that there were some guys that they felt might go on waivers. Considering its waivers, Urbom is probably as good as it gets.

Urbom was tremendous for Brandon back in Jr. People always say you can tell when a shutdown defenceman is doing his job because you don't notice him or he is rarely talked about. In the case of Urbom, he was so good you couldn't help but admire how good he was and how strong of game he had at that level.
Obviously success in jr doesn't mean alot but I would like to see him given a shot in Calgary.

Mike Vogel @VogsCaps 30s #Caps have claimed defenseman Alexander Urbom off waivers from the New Jersey Devils.
Washington was 20th on the waiver priority list.
Everyone else clears waivers

Hopefully this means Breen gets a legitimate shot when he's healthy. They are similar prospects and the Flames desperately need some truculence on the back end.

Disappointed that they didn't claim Urbom. They could lose pending-UFAs Russell, Butler and Smith this off-season and no one would care. Urbom taking one of their places, like Smith who just days ago it was confirmed no other team in the NHL would have them on their team, wouldn't have a detrimental effect. Worst case scenario is he sucks and fits right in with the rest of the bottom pairing candidates, best case is he's a 22 year old good skating 6'5'' defenseman who improves. And I mean they have the cap space and aren't close to the contract limit.
The only saving grace was that he wasn't taking one of their spots as they play a different game and his direct competition would be Breen. If Breen doesn't play when healthy though I will be very disappointed.

I'd rather promote Breen/Wotherspoon/Sieloff/Ramage/Cundari when the time comes to see what we have in these guys.
