If they think Colburne can project to a similar or better player then Horak then I lean towards Colburne because of his size.

Not saying it's a bad pick up - for 4th it's very good. But there's a reason it didn't take a 2nd to pry him loose and I think it's only wise to keep expectatiins in line with that.
And I'm biased - I've always liked Horak's hockey sense. Heady player with more to offer than he's had a chance to show. Would like to see him get some real ice time this year to show what he's got.

I felt that the team needed Monahan because they could use size in the middle. They're saying this deal doesn't affect his status, but I find that very difficult to believe.

I want to see Horak rewarded too and agree with you, and I also didn't like moving Backs to the wing either, we have soooo many forwards now lol. If the Flames could deal Stajan or move him to the wing?? I don't know. With Colborne coming in though, and him being a waiver player the Flames are undoubtedly rolling with him at either the 3rd or 2nd line center spot. Gallardi has been playing to become center all pre-season and hasn't looked out of place, his energy and the depth of players places him as 4th line center with Bouma and Horak only because there is no room for them elsewhere. That's not your typical 4th line. Monahan most likely slots in as 3rd line center if he stays up which sounds like he is leaving the top center spot open for one of Backlund/Stajan. It's a tough line-up to chart for sure.

I as well.
I think Colborne would look solid on the Left side of a Monahan - Jones line.
While squid is down
Glencross- Stajan- Hudler
Baertschi- Backlund - Stempniak
Colborne- Monahan- Jones
Horak- Galiardi- Bouma
Jackman, Mcgratton
Man, its gonna be a dog fight for minutes! You play like crap, you lose your minutes.

Not saying he is Joe Thorton, but he uses his body to protect the puck, not to hit people.
Hitting is over rated.

This!
All the times I've watched Colborne, I didn't see a guy who went out of his way to smash people. He's Thornton-esque in a sense that he uses his size on the offensive side of the puck, not necessarily the defensive side.
I'm completely okay with that.

Agreed!
All of CP wants monahan in 1a spot and Backlund in 2a blah blah blah.... Whatever happened to who deserves it gets it. This is sports... The best man usually wins the job ... "Usually"

First Line Centre

After giving this some thought, I think the thing I like most about it is that it gives us better depth at centre. I don't necessarily think he should be ahead of Backlund or Stajan, and didn't want to see him take Monahan's spot after his good showing in camp (we'll see after 9 games), but I don't think Colborne is really 4th line C material.
After that though, I think he should be ahead of Galliardi at centre, and as for Horak and Knight, too bad, If Colborne has more skill, than with his size, that's something you try to develop.
Then main thing I don't want to see is Monahan buried. He either needs 2/3 line minutes, with good skilled wingers, or he may as well just go back to juniors in my opinion. Then, I don't want to see Backlund on the wing. I think he's got a good chance of becoming our top centre this year. He's a great 2-way player with skill.
I suppose I would place them Backlund, Monahan/Colborne, Stajan, although that might be a slight disservice to Stajan.
Who play's 4th line Centre?

Going into the summer we had many glaring issues. Goaltending and centre were the 2 biggest. It was always pretty clear Ramo/Macdonald/Berra was the flames plan in net this year. At C all we had was Stajan, Baclund with Horak, Reinhart, Granlund as pros locked in for this season. Since the Flames added Monahan (18), Knight (22), and now Colborne (23). At this stage only Monahan looks like a future top line guy and that is a few years out. Knight and Colborne join Backund as intriguing you pros who have all had various levels of hype in the past. Looking at this in terms of rebuilding I think the flames have approached the center ice position very well this summer

Monahan should be sent back to junior, at least until other chips are played and a Center is moved out.
Stajan is the no. 1 Center this year, people need to accept it. He's played really well for the better part of two years now, he deserves more respect than we give him.
That said, I still dislike the makeup of this team, too many forwards, especially playing positions other than their natural.

I think it will be Colborne.
Assuming Cammalleri to LTIR tomorrow, this is how I see the line-up on Thursday:
Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Baertschi - Backlund - Jones
Galiardi - Monahan - Hudler
Bouma - Colborne - Horak

Stajan simply has to be trade bait but that is not happening until the deadline. He is a good player on a bad team or would likely fit nicely as a 3rd line C on a good team
The kids will get in the lineup alot this year but I do think Monahan gets sent back unless he scores ppg in his first 9

If he is sent back to junior, he has to stay there until his OHL team plays its last game.
If Ottawa keeps him the whole season, and is as bad as everyone expects them to be, he'll be available to the Flames in mid-March. However, the 67s are unlikely to keep him the whole season, and if they trade him to a playoff team, he likely wouldn't be available at all (especially if he is traded to London, which is hosting the Memorial Cup).

One of Jackman or McGrattan is in the lineup each night this year. Especially if Monahan is also dressed. Guaranteed.
I like the idea of giving Monahan 9 games, get a sense of what it is like to be an NHL center, and a better idea of what he will need to do to take his game to the next level. After that, I like the idea of giving Backlund/Knight/Colburne/Horak/Reinhart as many minutes as possible at center and hope like hell two or three of them break through as competent NHL centers by next season.

I don't think you move Stajan, Backlund, or Monahan away from centre. I see it as a competition between Horak and Colborne for the last C spot since Galiardi is already accustomed to the wing. Maybe Horak and Colborne end up rotating between 4th line centre and winger, with one getting scratched when we need McGrattan/Jackman in. IMO if any forward on the Flames roster should be waived, it is Jackman.

I forgot about Sieloff so I guess that's six. Berra, Breen, Sieloff, Street, B.Jones and maybe Horak. I am hoping Horak will stay though.
Looks like the Flames put B.Jones, B.Street and Smith. So it means, they have to send 3 more and that would be Berra, Breen and maybe Sieloff or Horak.
