Liles at half salary would be good.

And Emmerton, sounds like he'd be worth a shot.
No that was taken out with the new CBA and replaced with teams can retain up to 50% of a player's salary they trade to another team.

I bet sob would stay on a line with sieloff if he is as pesky as they say he will need a strong partner to help in the scrums or to deter other players from going after him

For those who believe the Flames will place a claim on John-Michael Liles:

Age 33: Instantly becomes the oldest player on the team along with Joey MacDonald, and we all know what kind of future MacDonald has with this club.

Salary: 3.875 million cap hit with a modified no trade clause through 2015/16. I don't care how much cap space we have, that's a lot to take on for Liles.

Production: 0.34 PPG which ranked him 4th on the Leafs behind Franson, Phaneuf, and Gunnarsson last year. He was their 4th best offensive defenseman. His production has been declining for the last couple of years from his peak of roughly 0.6 PPG in his prime.

Size: Listed at 5'10" and 185 pounds. Had all of 4 PIMs last season. Not likely going to help an already undersized and physically weak defense in Calgary.

In summary, soft, expensive, post-apex player. Do not want.

No way we claim Liles. The only way he comes to Calgary is with a pick and/or prospect coming back with him

If the Flames wanted Liles they would have gotten him thrown into the Colborne deal and avoided the thousands of dollars it will cost to pick Liles off waivers.

Bingo, covers all the bases on this one IMO. There is no way we go after JML, he's not the player he was anymore by a long shot and the depth we have accumulated on D makes claiming him baffling to say the least. Nothing to see here. Watch Detroit take him haha.

Liles would have made sense had we traded for him & received a nice draft pick as well. As a waiver pick-up he makes no sense at all.

I'd rather see what Sieloff can do, personally. We already have Giordano, Brodie & Russell who more-or-less do what Liles does, but better & cheaper.

As far as waiver pick-ups, I'd consider Jack Skille as a younger & faster Jackman. Big, quick young RW...

I want Skille too, former 7th overall, big bodied RW who is only 26 and falls into that 22-27 YO category. Has the shipped sailed on him though??? Is he unclaimed?

Skille cleared this morning according to CBJ beat writers

Another interesting RW that has Weisbrod connections is Jordan Caron. Some media types thought he might be on waivers this weekend but Boston protected him. He may show up on there later in the season. Former 25th overall pick in 2009 6'2'' and 202lbs.

The problem with him is that he really lacks Skille.

Hey - oooooooooo

He's a Yelle type forward if he finishes refining and peaking as a player. Nothing wrong with warriors who know that it takes small plays to win games and Skille can do that. He's big bodied and a right handed shoot, wouldn't have been a bad pick up but I can see why they passed as well.

lol at the pun, a pun is always fun.

I thought Street outplayed Jackman. Dissapointed he didn't make the team. Great on faceoffs, played with a bit of an edge during pre-season.

Flames are down to 26 roster spots after those players are assigned. The only waiver exempt players are Monahan (who if sent down can't come back), Baertschi, Horak, Berra and Sieloff?

If we're going with the assumption that Monahan is getting a tryout, to get to the 23 man roster before the season starts they'll either have to assign 3 of those other players to Abbortsford or possibly utilize the IR. There's not enough time to waive a player and assign him before the season starts. They can do whatever the heck they want after opening day and before Thursday, especially with no recall waivers this year, but I wonder if Sieloff was kept up in favour of Smith because it would allow the possibility to make a waiver claim and get roster size compliant prior to the start of the season.

So if they do claim a player, they're up to 27 players. Assign Baertschi, Horak, Berra and Sieloff to get to 23. And then they can shuffle the deck, put players on waivers, recall Baertschi after the players clear etc. Otherwise, I don't know if I believe Sieloff made the team even on a tryout basis. I think it would make more sense to have him play in the AHL this year instead of jumping from Juniors to the NHL.

Hopefully though the Colborne trade didn't come with a handshake agreement.

Don't think so, 1 more year of being exempt. Could be wrong, but if he does have to clear waivers that's even less flexibility. Again, don't really know the IR potential players though either.

Ramo is also not waiver eligible. Feaster made that known last week sometime? Although he won't be sent down. Still hope McDonald loses the back up role to Berra.

They're competing for different roles. street didn't outperform anyone in the top 6, and he isn't a bottom six player. Jackman had a pretty good pre season. Looked like he was 28 again.

No, he can play 57 NHL games this season before he loses his waiver exemption.

Maybe 2 or 3 players(not including waiver pickup by Oilers) might get picked up or maybe none of the players on the list. I think all of them including the Flames waiver players will start in the minors.
