I remember reading in his draft year that because his dad collected in excess of a million bucks a year that Joe had motivation issues (i.e., 'oh well if I don't do well in the NHL. I have my dad to fall back on'.) I'm just bringing it up because it was one of the knocks on him back in the day.

Don't know if motivation is an issue at all anymore or if it ever was.

As for Colburn seems like a good trade. Just hope he doesn't have motivation/party issues like people have mentioned. Hoping it was the wrist injury which caused him to fizzle and not the short stint in the nhl with larger pay cheques.

Gaining 15-20 pounds in a couple months would leave me skeptical normally but watching him in person, I can believe it.

And (not directed at RichKlit) the people bitching about people bitching about this trade seem to be far worse...
I dont think he is small at all, i think he needs time to learn, i have a hard time believing he can match up against the size and skill set of the western conference centermen at this stage in his development.

I see. Your crotch must me burning from riding the fence. You like it, but,,, yadayada. The thing that degrades things here is you not knowing that this was a good trade, don't try and turn the tables my friend. I'm not as worried about what people think of my opinion as you, nor do I use them to try and back my words. It is what it is is. The "people" can think for themselves and I'm not trying to be a rockstar poster here on CP trying to gain sympathy or whatever you are trying to do. Of course "others" won't like the trade- there will always be others.

I concede that D. Jones and O'Brien may exceed expectations in the short term. But do you really think they're parts of the long term picture here whereas Tanguay and Sarich were not?

D. Jones is in the long term plans...younger, bigger winger with scoring potential

sounds like exactly what the team is looking for

He's younger than Tanguay, but 29 is a bit old to be in the long term plans. He'll be 32 when his contract expires and the rest of the core is coming together.

Hopefully he's serviceable until his contract runs out. I like the glimpses I saw of him in the preseason, I hope he can re-find his scoring touch and finish some plays.

I hope the Flames take a chance on as many former first rounders, and highly thought of prospects as they can over the next couple years. 2/3 of the roster shouldn't be part of long-term plans, and are entirely replaceable imo. The more Colborne type low-risk high-reward players we can bring in the better.

Jones has played 2 full nhl seasons (70+ games)

20 and 27 goals...could be a big upside

Joe Colburn is now our biggest, center prospect. We have wanted this guy for awhile. At 6'5 and almost 220 lbs and at what 23 years old ?? He was practically untouchable last year and now we get him for a 4th ? I understand some doubt because he had a so-so preliminary this year, but he also needs a shot. He got 2 assts under 12 mins tonight. Burke obviousley knows his worth. He is young yet and I have zero problem with us dropping a 4th for him considering he was a 16th overall a few years back and has 4 NHL games under his belt. I like managements choice and I think they know what they are doing. They are definately more qualified than us.

Yeah, lets get as many former first rounders as we had of former 20 goal scorers.

He actually has 16 NHL games according to hockeydb.com.

Which surprised me, the way media has been reporting him I thought he actually was an experienced NHL player. Out of the prospects, Horak still has the most NHL experience at Centre.
