FWIW, Corey Pronman just ranked Colborne as the 2nd best prospect in the Leafs system: http://www.puckprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1578

Keep in mind, he also has Shinkaruk over Baertschi.

Wonder if Stajan is moving out faster than expected. We know Burke was not a fan and maybe pulling the strings on this series of deals. Pure speculation on my part.
And I liked Stajans efforts last year.

He can also play the wing, and he can also be a spare on the team...IMO Street, or Jackman are the most likely affected.

Glencross Stajan Cammalleri
Hudler Backlund Jones
Stempniak Monahan Horak
Bouma X Galiardi

McGratton
Colborne
Street
Jackman

From the four above, pick 3. One to play centre, and 2 as extra forwards. IMO it could be Jackman

I'm fine with this, so long as he's playing behind Backlund, Stajan and Monahan.

Looks like Burkes already pulling some strings behind the scene.

I don't have any problems with Monahan staying in junior for another year. I'm sure he'll get his 9 games and then he'll be sent back down. I'm interested to see if Joe still has that upside that everybody has talked about.

Yup, I said it earlier but it looks like we'll realistically have three 2nd lines and a 3rd/4th hybrid. Or two 2nds and two 3rds depending how you manage the lines.

Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Cammalleri - Backlund - Hudler
Baertschi - Monahan - D. Jones
Galiardi - Colborne - Bouma/Horak/McGrattan

Flames say no conditions on the 4th, Leafs say conditional 4th, possible upgrade to 3rd if conditions met. Which is it?

The conditions are that Colborne records 10 goals and 35 points this season AND that Calgary makes the playoffs.

I really don't like this trade. Colborne now has to stay up in the NHL, or we lose him on waivers.
or it could mean they will keep him as the 13th forward, or send down someone else. This is not a Monahan vs. Colborne situation. If anything I think guys like Horak will be more likely to be cut as a result

Definitely. I think he will be kept as a 13th forward of he doesn't win a top 9 spot. I also think Colborne will be tried on the wing, he has done alot of that for the Leafs.

Definitely like this trade for being low cost. Lots of teams have been very tempted to have this guy since he was drafted but he has never seems to live up to his potential - he's a 6'5" centerman with scoring touch. For whatever reason he's never put things together to crack the NHL. Maybe coming home to Calgary is just what he needs.

I think the team is going to send Monahan back to junior. Doesn't make sense playing him in the NHL this year. Give Colborne a shot. When they trade Stajan they can bring up Knight. Next season they'll have a few holes up front for some guys like Monahan, Gaudreau, Poirier, Ferland, etc. and the team can go all youth movement then. Have to admit that the thought of having Monahan, Colborne, Backlund and Knight as the centers, with Reinhart as the fill in, makes me smile. Allows them to move a solid two way guy like Horak to the wing and strengthen the defensive side of the puck in the future and will allow the likes of Baertschi and Gaudreau to free wheel a bit more. I like the way this is headed, on paper at least.

Getting young players that have potential and could become legit players for us down the road is always a good thing. Plus it's only a 4th, who cares.

From a hockey perspective, this is great. However I personally know the kid loves to party. I don't know coming back home will be the best environment for him to succeed. I hope I'm wrong.

Could we be getting ourselves into a position to package players for a good young defender? That seems to be the next logical move here.

That's about as unconditional as it gets.

"With the opportunity to speak with Brian Burke and learn about Joe's hockey sense and character from someone who had him as a player and knows him so well, it became clear to us that this is the type of young, big centre we need," Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement.
"He fits in very well with our rebuild and provides size up the middle which we believe is critical going forward. The fact that he is from Calgary is an added bonus. We look forward to welcoming him to the Flames family."
