I'm surprised Jermaine still comes back to GM scrums.

I'm not sure how it works? I think they have to set the 23 man roster by Monday. Going by Feasters comments Cammi will be close to being ready for opening night. Wouldn't that make him day to day and still part of the 23 set roster?

Here's the official language from the NHL on injured reserve: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26377#injured

If they think the hand is bad enough, they place him on the list from the date of the injury (Edm preseason game Sep 14?) and can replace him on the roster. He already fits the seven day criteria.

The part of me that wears a tinfoil hat suspects he might not be able to go until the 10th game for some reason.

LOL Feaster " don't think we will win all 82 games". Good for him.

He surely does not like these questions, but what did he expect. There is not much else to talk about from a media point of view.

Anyone care what Mark Spector has to say about things? Didn't think so:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/s...han-baertschi/

Quote:
“Every morning you look in the mirror so that the mirror makes you look good,” Hartley said. “Those guys will be our mirror.”
That’s why this weekend is all about reflection for Calgary. With some crucial decisions to be made on the handful of prospects in the Flames’ possession right now, the front-office meetings that will shape this Flames roster the next two days are about being able to look in the mirror come Jan. 1—without having to call in sick. That means making the right calls on Sean Monahan and Sven Baertschi, and it will give us a window into who is actually making them.
Head coach Bob Hartley, in his postgame address after the final preseason game, sounded less than sold that Monahan—who turns 19 on Oct. 12—was NHL ready. The coach is right. But he has also never been known as kid-friendly; he is a believer in the traditional, time-honoured process of player development—a belief that tends to go out the window during these rebuilds.
Quote:
Farming Baertschi out to AHL Abbotsford is the best thing for the young player. Moving Monahan back to Ottawa for a fourth year of junior is what the Detroit Red Wings would do—and what the Flames should do. But without those two, who represents the bright future this organization is promising its fans? Troy Brodie? He’s a young, up-and-coming defenceman, but by no means does he have the sexy name—or game—to sell hope.
Quote:
With that in mind, and against all better judgment, here’s what will happen in Calgary: The Flames play seven of their first 10 on the road, which, theoretically, means less pressure on a kid to perform. So Monahan dips into the nine-game stint that junior-aged players are allowed without triggering their entry-level deals. Once that’s up, everyone will know if he’s ready for prime time, which Jay Feaster, if not Hartley, is hoping for. “He’s put himself in a good spot right now,” the GM said Thursday. “He’s going to make mistakes, but he has very good hockey sense. He continues to be in the mix .”
Baertschi will stay in Calgary as well, despite an average training-camp performance and the lingering doubts about his attitude. They’ll likely room him with a veteran influence like Glencross or Mark Giordano and hope that all the losing doesn’t sour him further. Who to play him with will be another challenge. With Mike Cammalleri nursing a hand injury—and former linemates Alex Tanguay and Iginla long gone—there’s not a lot of skill to go around, which is tough for young players who fancy themselves as skill guys.
Who the hell is Troy Brodie? Nice research.

It's almost like Feaster has been attending Burke's University of Media Relations.

Yup, Detroit has never drafted a kid in the top 10 and put him in the NHL right away. That player that doesn't exist also didn't go on to play 22 seasons and score 692 goals, 1755 points, and win 3 cups with the team.

Detroit is successful because they understand that different players have different development paths. Not because they keep players in the AHL longer than they should for "extra seasoning".

Monahan may be NHL ready, he may need more time in Juniors. He will get 9 games to show what he can do. (As a side note it's really nice to see an 18 year old who is mature beyond his years on and off the ice. It's not very often you see someone so young winning face-offs and back checking.)

I'd also like to know how Spector knows that the best development path for Baertschi is more time in the AHL. I'm not saying it is or it isn't, I would just like more substance to the statement it all.

I think he is right about what WILL happen with Monahan and Baertschi though, he just doesn't seem to have a lot of substance to his claims about what SHOULD happen.

Also that Troy Brodie slip is pretty brutal.

Before we make too much fun, are we sure the T in T.J. doesn't stand for Troy?

I honestly have no idea, but it's possible.

That was my first thought, but no links I found on Google indicated what TJ stands for.

You can tell how much time he spent on that article.

It's almost as if he cruised HF for 15 minutes and just compiled a bunch of posts from the Oilers board. He has no idea what's best for any player. He's simply taking the opposite stance of whatever he thinks the Flames will do, and mocks that decision in the process.

It's typical of his writing.

He confused TJ Brodie with Troy Bodie.

Mark Spector - the great Oiler shill who for years has complemented the Oilers on doing exactly what the Flames are currently doing. How did the Oilers rebuild go so far, you know playing all of the 18 year old kids and selling that to their fans. This guy is a hack.

The team remains without Mike Cammalleri. The Flames coach has no plans to get the 31-year-old into action until he's ready.

“It would be nice but we’re not going to put him on the ice until he’s okay,” Hartley said. “There’s no sense. It’s a nagging injury and if we don’t fix it right away, he’s going to play with this all year. We need Cammy at his best and we’ll take the time that he needs.

“I’m anxious to see him but the medical staff is on top of it. I always listen to those guys. When they give me the green light on a player on the ice, he’s going to be on the ice. Until then, we’re not going to gamble.”

Something to consider about Baertschi:

Maybe he is not as good as the hype that surrounded him and the expectations placed on him by many fans?

Evidence: A real top prospect, Sean Monahan, has come in as a much younger player and shown many Flames fans the difference between a top 5-10 pick and a top 20 pick.

I like Baertschi a lot and thought he got a raw deal from the organization last year, but, I think he's a 7. When a 7 (Baertschi) is surrounded by a sea of 3s (Nemisz, Chucko, Byron), he looks like a 10. Eventually though, when a 10 (Monahan) shows up, that 7 is back to looking like a 7.

The reverse can also happen. You get a one or two 10s in there and suddenly 7s look like 6s.

Baertschi has always had an upward battle towards becoming an effective NHL player. Size, play style and some are now speculating attitude.

I hope he makes the team out of camp because I don't think the AHL will do him much good at this point. I think he he needs NHL development at this point if he's going to develop at all.

Horak never should've been sent down from his initial appearance under Brent. I hope this team, devoid of natural centres, doesn't make the same mistake again.

I wonder if once the season starts, he elects to get the surgery and rehab in time for the trade deadline.
