I agree if he signs in TO. If he goes to UFA he will get more. The cap is going up and from what i read most analysts think it will be $80 million in 4 years. GM's are stupid and will spend the extra money like its the last day on earth.

They are both not great on the defensive side but i think Dion would be better as a 2nd pairing d-man over Wideman.
As for price i would have no problem having Dion back if it was $5.5 million. I think he gets way more than that though.

It is hard to compare them directly with defensive stats but the basis of my comparison goes as follows:
Wideman has more blocked shots and significantly less "Give Aways" than Phaneuf (Phaneuf had 20 more give aways!). And Wideman is performing all these blocked shots in less play time.
Phaneuf on a playoff team is a -4, Wideman on a basement team is a -9.
Phaneuf definitely has more hits though.
I can see why Phaneuf is going to get the big payday. He is the captain of the Leafs and he is a pretty good Dman but he probably shouldn't be getting $6.5M and he definitely shouldn't be getting more than that. The other guys making that kind of money are better than him.

I think you are way off.
I think he gets $5.5 million if he stays in TO.
Open market he could go as high as $6.5 million. Not saying he is worth that much but GM's are stupid.

I think Phaneuf will get a contract that looks almost identical to Bouwmeester's from the Leafs.
On the open market, I think his contract will look more like Bouwmeester's old contract.

Where's Moon with all this Phaneuf talk?
Maybe if he signs a reasonable contract he will lose the title of "most over rated" given out by his fellow players each year

Count me among those that believes that Phaneuf is going to have to take a discount on his next contract. I dont feel his play is indicative of his current contract, and, like Bouwmeester, hes going to have to take a bit of a haircut.

Leaf's AGM was just on Bob McCown. He said the Leafs can be barely under the cap if they only keep 20 players but they will probably make some moves.

5.4 million would be a steal. He has far better stats than Boumeester did. (Inregards to the perceived discounted new contract Boumeester signed).

He'll get 6-6.5 on a discounted deal with the Leafs. On another team as a UFA, it's higher.

Sorry, your Phaneuf love is say too subjective and off base to have a real conversation with. You're being silly.

Why? Right now his actual dollars are $5.5 with a $6.5 cap hit. What has he done to deserve that?
His dollars are comparable with: Pietrangelo, Karlsson, Boyle, Green, Chara and Doughty.
Tell me his skills compare in any way with any of them. I dont think theres a single NHL GM who would take Phaneuf over any one of those guys with the possible exception of Green.
Not to mention, hes 28 while the majority of those guys are 23 or 24.
I'm sorry, he is being paid way, way above his talent level.

I look at his stats and current market value of other players and I laugh @ the 5.5 deal.
Again, Boumeester took a discount. But his stats were easily worse.

Actually, 3 of them are older. 28 is prime years for a D-man.
Boyle and Green right now would not be chosen over Phaneuf.

You have to look past the stats a little. Bouwmeester's stats arent great, but he eats tons and tons of reliable minutes against tough opposition. He also leaves a lot to be desired offensively. He isnt a #1 guy.
Neither is Phaneuf.
Phaneuf was paid in advance for potential, that potential never materialized and as such Phaneuf is overpaid. He receives a lot of criticism because he was paid as though he was going to become an elite defenceman in the NHL and he never did. He isnt a #1 guy either.
I dont see him still getting $6M+. Dont forget, whoever signs him to his next contract is signing 29 year old Dion Phaneuf to, ostensibly, his last contract.
If Dion wants term hes going to have to give on dollars. And most players at 29 want term and NTC.

I disagree he hasn't lived up to his potential. Dion has been playing the best hockey of his career in Toronto. He's playing a far different role than he ever did in Calgary.
And 6.5 million doesn't mean the same as it did 5 years ago.
And guess what? Dion also plays huge minutes and is reliable.
