do they need to make more moves to make this fit, or are they under the cap still?

Fan960 commented this morning the Leafs are approximately 1M over cap.
Leafs will need to create some cap space for sure....
I believe the Leafs have till Monday to get their cap in alignment.

it really depends on how the season goes. If they are not a playoff team come deadline, i fully expect phanuef to be dealt.
it will be interesting to see if rielly makes the team, as they suddenly have a bit of an issue on the backend with too many bodies around.
am somewhat shocked liles hasn't been moved yet.

Lebrun says that they can fit him under the cap but only if they have a bare bones roster (20 players instead of 23).
That pretty much means a trade, or they're about to lose Colborne on waivers.

Wonder what the Leafs would give the Flames for taking Liles off their hands

The Flames should be asking for a 2nd at the least, throw in some scrubs to even it out for optics sake.

Ridiculously cheap deal for Franson and there's no way he's back next year unless they clear some cap space. I wouldn't be shocked to see him traded at the deadline if they're out of it.

a three year contract for a smallish puckmoving 4th at best defensemen over $3 million bucks a year?
pass, he's literally untradable and not a defensemen that we need.
If we did pick him up, we'd probably end up packaging that 2nd just to move him at the deadline.

I don't see 3 mil per being that much of a concern for this cap strapped team. If we could pick up a second and move some of the other obvious concerns on D further down the depth chart so be it.

It's 3.875. Significant amount over 3 years.
I've been using the Lombardi-Franson to Toronto trade as a comparable. The Leafs took on Lombardi for 2 years, but also got Franson as compensation.
Likes makes more than Lombardi did and for more term.

can a team retain salary in a trade for certain years of the contract?

shocked in the sense that, isn't this sort of the position feaster (and perhaps other teams) wanted to be in, to gain assets from teams that are in a cap crunch?
Liles isn't an "asset" per say, but depending on how tight things are for the leafs, curious what throw ins we could get for him. I would also place him higher on the flames depth chart, than o'brien, butler, smith, and probably russel. it's not good cap hit, it's not a good term, but again, i think a deal is there to be had that still can benefit both parties.

Nashville did it because they were bleeding money. The Leafs are the richest team. They can still move other bodies and make it work.

The Leafs have a ton of cap room next season. This is a 1 year issue only. And he's RFA, so they won't trade him.

They didn't want a one year deal with Franson becuase they have to many UFA players that are ahead of him in order of importance. He still could be traded if they think his arbitration case will be to high.
On another note, someone told me that Franson was eligible for arbitration this year. He turned it down because he thought he could get a good deal with Toronto. Is this true? If so, he must be kicking himself.
