Kinect 2 isn't looking great so far. After three years and an install base of 30ish million for Kinect 1, all we have is Dance Central (I'm not even sure I'd add Child of Eden there but still raises the question).

Less than 2 months out. Microsoft better be able to smoothly and easily justify to customers why they should pony up an extra $100 for their system.

http://kotaku.com/why-im-a-little-bi...ect-1381738496

After this laborious effort (which I’m assured will be streamlined before launch) Kinect Sports Rivals goes through the process of translating the information into a virtual representation of me. As it does its calculations I ask myself, ‘if this is difficult with a Microsoft representative guiding me step by step, how difficult will it be for a ten year old in the comfort of his or her own home, or parents who’ve never used a console before?

Then my avatar pops up. It looks vaguely like me. Vaguely. That’s being generous. The 3DS did a similar job of creating my Mii with a single low-resolution photograph. Was it really worth all that effort?

Yesterday I spent a fair amount of time with the Xbox One’s new Kinect, and it seemed like a significant chunk of that time was spent trying to get things to work when (two months from the launch of Xbox One) they should simply work.

I find myself asking another question: three years after the release of Kinect, how many video games have really worked well with Kinect? I come up with two names. Two. Dance Central and Child of Eden. In three years. Is it possible that Kinect just isn’t suited for video games?

But that was the 10%. During the remaining 90%, Kinect felt like it was a hindrance, forcing users to swim against the giant leaps Microsoft made with Xbox One’s user friendly UI, which looks fantastic. Sure, I can turn Kinect off — that’s my choice. But I still have to pay for it. I don’t have a choice there.

So, yes. I think there are issues there — not with the Xbox One, with Kinect specifically. Forza Motorsport looks incredible, Ryse seems to have made strides in the combat department and I walked away genuinely blown away by the scale and ambition of Dead Rising 3.

But Kinect? I’m a little bit worried about Kinect.

Wonder if a similar functionality will allow for "backwards compatability".

Insert your PS3 Disk and you can stream the games from Gaikai.

I'm not sure I can see that. I would have to assume they'd try to resell you the game digitally or like the HD remakes that we've had this generation. Could be wrong though.

Maybe you get if for a discount ($5 or $10) like they are doing with the trade up program.

Sony has surprised with their more customer friendly moves this generation and this would only serve to be even more impactful.

Alright, here is at least some kind of Kinect 2 use. Gonna have to pay another subscription on top of the Gold for it (though there will probably be a free "bare demo").

Man... no offence but you sure do throw a negative spin on everything you post when it comes to Xbox lol. I was going to ask you for a source but I searched it myself. It's free for Gold members up until January 1st 2015.

I saw it kicking around but didn't have details about the subscription model - figured it would be an extra cost/"freemium". You're right, you'll be charged extra after about a year after release. At least they're finally showing a reason for the extra cost for a Kinect.

EDIT: Wait, so this won't work at all upon release if you don't already have a gold subscription? And after the first year, you'd have to pay both subscriptions to keep it working. Interesting to see if that double monetization strategy works.

Sounds a bit naff, especially compared to something more tailored to a console experience like Wii Fit, but hey, it's free. Or at least, it is until December 2014, after which a "paid Xbox Fitness Pass subscription and an Xbox Live Gold membership" will be required. So a paid subscription on top of a paid subscription? Great.

Details of an Xbox One pre-release nationwide tour have leaked from a staging area of xbox.com, discovered by a NeoGAF forums member, notes that the Xbox One will be showcased in a 36-city tour across the United States and Canada prior to its planned retail launch on November 22.

Hopefully the Canada portion of the tour isn't like the Wii U's tour, which was Toronto and many cities East of there....and Vancouver.

For those that were worried about the PS4 noise levels, it will be quieter than the PS3.
Quote:
  • Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played.
  • The noise level of the console during operation is generally much lower than it was on the PS3.
  • The PS4′s cooling fan has a low noise level and stepless speed control (meaning that it will increase its speed to match heat smoothly and not in sudden steps like the one on the PS3).

50 GB for a game - I wonder if (future) download speeds/limits will let a full digital download ecosystem work. Probably I guess, it'll just get faster over time.

Guerilla Games' debut PlayStation 4 launch game, Killzone: Shadow Fall, is "an uber file" of 50GB, according to Sony UK's Fergal Gara

That is pretty crazy file size, think I will be sticking with Disk based games for this reason alone.

Recently 30GB has been pushing it for some PC games (without expansions and MODs), 50 GB is pretty ridiculous.

I assume after some initial backlash, companies will start offering multiple download sizes for games, with reduced quality cutscenes, as these are typically the biggest part of a games footprint. Max Payne 3 is pretty notorious for this.

50GB for a game, and the console has a 500GB HD. Yeah I will be staying with physical disks for now.

Hmmm, no file size? How do they make this 15-20 minute estimate?

I assume the PS4 will have something similar, though not as big/long as they don't have to patch out the DRM.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/08/0...about-xbox-one

How large is the Xbox One’s Day One update? How long will it take to install?

MARC WHITTEN, XBOX ONE CHIEF PLATFORM ARCHITECT: We are optimizing Xbox One so that the day one update is as fast as possible. While we’re still finalizing the details, we expect that the download will take between 15 and 20 minutes for most users.

I thought XBone 180 was made with ATI, not nVidia. Strange, oh well.

So if they're going for 60 fps, it'll be what - 900p like Ryse or 720p maybe?

http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/09/...e-on-xbox-one/

The folks from the Japanese website Game*Spark talked with Respawn’s Community Manager at the game’s booth and were told that the game ran on PCs equipped with Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 video cards, with Xbox One controllers attached.

With that kind of configuration the game achieved a smooth and stable framerate of 60 frames per seconds. The community manager also mentioned that the Xbox One version of the game will achieve the same performance. The final target resolution was not mentioned.

It is using AMD (formerly ATI). But Titan is also being released on PC so they were probably demoing that version.
