Still will need him to work on his skating but it looks vastly improved versus what he was like in the dub and previous prospect camps.
Monahan is such a smart player - the puck follows him around. I'm usually against keeping kids with the big team at 18 (especially as you lose a year of that ELC) but Monahan is making a case. Will be interesting to see what Feaster and co. do after the 9 game mark.

I'm really not even sure what is the best option at this point. It's a toss-up between preserving a year of his ELC and trying to sell the fans on the future of the club. Looking at how the club up North has now burned through 2 of their 1st overall picks' ELC's with not even a playoff berth to show for it I feel like we'll be better served in the long run sending him back to juniors.

I would hope they don't send him back to a league he's clearly too good for just because they want to save one year on his ELC

Yeah. What's so bad exactly about losing a year of ELC?

Yeah it's not like we are giving massive contracts. In fact this summer is a perfect example of what the flames doing bridge deals.

Monahan is NHL ready, but would likely benefit from dominating junior.
Ferland and Bouma are better than Reinhart and Horak from multiple viewings of each this preseason.
Kari Ramo will do an adequate job as the starter. Adequate meaning that he'll be one of the top 30 or so goalies in the NHL. If he was the backup to a superior goalie, then it would be great, but we don't have one right now. Basically to me he looks like Vesa Toskala clone when he was with Toronto. He'll be there and give you a decent performance most of the time, but he'll also be extremely frustrating at times.

Smith was iffy tonight. Not sure where he sits.
Horak & Bouma cemented themselves in their spots, as did Ramo. Knight and Ferland were both decent if unspectacular. Reinhart was also good, if unspectacular.

One could say 12 years ago pre-season was like playing shinny, nobody took a chance at getter hurt, 8-7 games were the norm...today, not so much.

Not sure if I'm all that confident going into the season with Smith and Russell as the #6 and #7 d-men.
Then again, Cundari was unspectacular as well last night for the Heat. He was just kind of... there.

No one knows if Karri will be adequate or not, but Toskala seems like an odd comparison. A Vesa Toskala clone? I'm sure there are better comparables out there.

GreT performance. Only things I can add from behind the flames bench that might not have been seen on the stream was that Ramo was having a laugh and a joke every time he came to the bench. Did not look nervous at all. Also, Bouma took a big chunk out of Boyle as they were changing in the 3rd and Boyle was snarling at him. Was great to see.

I was more meaning results than style. Ramo is a lot less composed in his crease and with his movements that Toskala was. He'll be a bottom 5 starter in the league, that would be an decent backup on several teams. Nothing really to write home about at all.

What's the downside of sending him back? One last season where he can dominate amongst his peers as opposed to playing substantially less on what is probably going to be a below average NHL team. He's still developing and it's key that he plays as much possible at this age. Lets not do things the Oilers way. Lets do this right. There's not a lot to be gained having him play on the big club this year.

Matty, your unwavering optimism regarding most of our prospects makes me severely concerned with Ramo's viability.
Not that that's a terrible thing though... I've sorta been holding out more hope for Berra if I'm honest. It would be nice if the 5 million dollar goalie could sorta earn it for at least a few years until Gillies is ready.

You're making very confident predictions. I think wait and see is the correct approach with regard to all the goalies in the organisation, whether it's the hottest flavor of the year in junior or the seemingly underwhelming guys battling for spots right now.

You don't need optimal technique to be a good starter in the NHL. Can't just glance at a goalie and tell his future.

For some reason I take your player assessments with a grain of salt. I think it's way too early to say how good Ramo or Berra are going to be, but so far they've been fine to great.
