Doesn't Liles have a no trade?

Don't forget Franson also wants a 1 year deal to carry him to UFA. If he is adamant about that with the Flames, I don't see Burke/Feaster giving up assets for what is essentially a rental player.

From what i read he wants a longer term contract than 2 years. He rather have a one year than a 2 year contract.

Also the reason he does not want the 2 year contract from the Leafs is because no matter how much they backload the contract they can't have the cap hit to high for this year. Basically the leafs are offering him a very low 2 year contract.

Either way I doubt he signs long term with the Flames. He can do a short term deal get to UFA and then get his money on a playoff team with the salary cap going up

Why would he not sign a long term contract with the flames? I'm not saying 6-7 years, but he was looking for a 3-4 year deal with TO at the start of negotiations, so why not Calgary?

He only went down to a 1 year contract recently when he realised that because of the cap trouble the leafs are in for this year, that it would effect the 2nd year of a 2 year deal. If the flames offered him a 2 year $3 million cap hit he would sign. He would also sign a 3 year deal for more money.

Leafs are pretty much offering him a $1.6 million a year contract for the next 2 years.

I don't like what it would cost for Franson. I think the Flames should stay away at this point.

Our 2nd rounder will likely be 30th overall. I doubt a 3rd rounder gets him.

I agree with this, considering i think it would cost more than just a 2nd round pick.

I don't agree that Franson is only looking for a one year deal.

I just don't see him giving up 3-4 years of his prime playing years to be part of a rebuild when he is one year away from UFA and basically can choose his team.

Toronto is in a better position than Calgary in terms of the playoffs and I am sure most players would choose Toronto over Calgary at this point in time if given the choice and similar money. I think the Flames would have to overpay to convince him to stay long term.

Modified NTC. So hard to say exactly what that includes.

Usually a list of a few teams he doesn't want to play for.

Almost every player would chose TO over Calgary. The problem is TO has no cap room and it effects all contract years he would sign for. Franson will not get a year deal from anybody. TO can't pay him much on a 2-3-4 or 5 year contract. Their offer is well below what he should get payed.

His options are accept TO offer, get traded to a team and accept their offer, or go to Europe.

I know what his options are I am responding to your question of why he wouldn't sign long term with Calgary.

If he gets traded to a team other than Calgary, I think its a different story and he may be willing to sign long term with them.
