No, clearly he made a nice comment about the captain of the team he is trying to make. What else would he say?

Giordano is the good and obvious choice as captain. I never would have thought he would be in this position in his early days with the Flames. I always liked him but looking back this is a surprise. One thing to consider about Gio's game these days is that his responsibilities have changed on the ice. He's being asked to be more of a shut down player, so his offensive instincts are curbed and doesn't look as impressive as in previous years.

I think we all expected pretty much what he said. Still okay to see the quote, though. I just wonder why when someone quotes a player saying something like this there's always someone asking "What did you expect?"

Because they want to feel like they were the first ones in the whooooole world to figure out that hockey players say generally predictable things. Never quote a hockey player, there will always be at least one person who feels the need to say "Of course he'd say that" as though nobody else is aware.
They're the equivalent of people who go up to a smoker and say "um, you know those are bad for you, right?".
Free thinkers, the leaders of tomorrow they are.

Just love the fact that he went undrafted and had to claw his way up to the top... now he is the captain of the Calgary Flames.

Was listening to Gio on the radio today and I agree, great choice.
He was saying that the leadership on the team now comes from Cammi, Glencross, Stajan, Stempniak and himself. Also mentioned that the team has to be more like friends and do things together outside of hockey. Said there is a lot of improvement to be made in that area.

Please. He worked his way up to the top. Leave the clawing to the Canucks — it goes so well with biting and hair-pulling.
(On topic: Congrats to Captain G!)

Not for the lack of trying, but he's looked average to terrible since the middle part of the last full season and he carried his bad play into last season. I've always been a big fan of Gio but he has looked real off the last 90 games or so.
I still think he'll make a good captain as he has all the qualities you want your captain you have but I just hope his play improves.

I wouldn't say he's looked terrible at any point. Terrible for your top defenceman maybe, but never once has he looked like a 7th defenceman.

I would say he has looked terrible quite a few times and you can't compare him to a 7th defenseman because he clearly isn't one. He hasn't been Butler terrible, but there were a lot of nights he was the worst defensemen on the ice for the Flames.
Like I said, that doesn't mean much when talking about captain material because he clearly has heart and will do anything to win but his play has to revert back to before mid season a couple seasons ago. I think after his injury he has never been the same.

I am so glad that Gio said the bolded part. I read a couple of articles a year ago that said after Dion left ( he took care of those kind of events) that no other players stepped up to organize these things. The first time they did something as a team away from the rink was Sutter's last year and it was Feaster who organized it.

One of the small joys of being around the team is getting to hear Bob Hartley's accent and wacky turns-of-phrase ("You're either in the parade or on the sidewalk," "Turnovers, they're good in bakeries, not in hockey," and so on).
And Giordano'll be a good captain, too.

Awesome move! From undrafted to captain of an NHL team. I also like how humble he is about it. I could see him pulling a Conroy and passing the captaincy to a younger franchise player when the time is right, whether it's Monahan or someone else.

I don't understand what practical purpose this would serve except to reinforce the importance that Iginla held for this team for so many years. In the wake of his departure, I actually think that these sorts of symbolic gestures are probably more damaging and pointless than anything.

Both Captained teams during a rebuild

Both were were known for hard work
Both can never be mistaken for a Norris Candidate
Both followed in the footsteps of legendary "face of the Flames" Captains
So if history repeats itself, Gio will be keeping the C warm for another Face of the Flames yet to be determined in a couple years.

There is one important difference: Simpson was a plug. On any decent team, he would not have been a top-6 defenceman; he probably couldn't have cracked the majority of NHL rosters. I can't think of a team offhand that would not have room for Giordano at least as a #6 (ignoring cap issues; he'd be a pricey #6).

Steve Smith was the Face of the Flames?
If that's the case, then in 2015, the captain of the Flames will be Ryan Smyth.
