I too, often buy $600 pieces of electronics and then put them in a drawer.
My house is positively riddled with them.

Ya, my Android sure is useless what with the 2+ year old features that iOS 7 only just now managed to implement for the iPhone. Yup, better put that thing in a drawer.

He's a great CEO if you are shorting the stock. Sort of like how we all feel Gillis and KLowe are great GMs.

He is showing himself as out of touch as guys like Bill Gates and Jim Balisillie. Even to his point, it seems that I see a bigger and bigger chunk of the iPhone market is suburban soccer mom's who like to show off the latest Apple product in its $70 Tory Burch case, and only ever use it for phoning and texting. That and grandparents looking for a non-intimidating first cell phone. Seems like the demo that actually uses their phones are going more and more Android. And really, who puts their cell phone in a drawer. Even if they aren't using it to their fullest potential (which I guess must be his point), they still carry their phone around with them.

Pretty uncharasmatic, dickish CEO Apple's got there. You'd think a company that relies 100% on marketing overpriced products would do something about that. Steve Jobs he is not.
Congrads on iOS 7. You can now do things my Galaxy S could do 3 years ago. Hell Im pretty sure I could put filters on my pictures on my Nokia E71 4-5 years ago. Apple Innovation.

I wonder when Google will pass Apple in market value. Around sept 2012 Apple had 3 times the value of google. To even suggest such a thing might happen a year ago, would have people laughing, but Google is now around 2/3s of their value, and the gap seems to be closing fast.
I think what everyone is finding out, is that Apple's Top down, closed eco system and OS approach only works when you have someone with exceptional vision at the top. They are not likely going to find someone like that, so unless they change their whole culture and philosophy, they aren't going to last.

Apple isn't courting the first time buyer looking for a discount phone. If you think that the bulk of the customers of iPhones and iPads are grandmothers and suburban moms who only use the devices to surf and text you are very mistaken. Apple users are more likely to spend money through their devices than other phones.

I am going to get flamed here but when people talked about the Apple walled garden they are talking about the control Apple has on its users. Android appeals to the consumer who might access their consumable media and other content from various sources, many not necessarily paid. Make no mistake though Google can't take any moral high ground here because it wants to do exactly the same, except differently (google tracking and analytics)

Really that's only relevant if you live outside of North America. Apple still has a better market share in you know.......where you, I, and we all live. It's like the Sony PS3 argument that it's outsold worldwide which really has little relevance because the 360 vastly oustells it where they live. Not sure how you can claim have won the war when your competitor still owns the most lucrative market.

Seriously, talk to any kid under 20, they will tell you that only old people use iPhones right now.

No it doesn't. Apple only owns 39.9% of the market share in North America. It still trails Android. But i really like your American-style of me-best attitude. Sorry dude but the other parts of the world matter.

I do find it more than a little bit humorous that you cited an article that based its conclusions on mobile cosmetics, jewelry and Hautelook, to rebut that suburban soccer mom's are becoming a bigger and bigger chunk of the iPhone demo.

And Apple is losing zero sleep on not getting that 18 year old as a customer.

If they aren't, then they have a pretty ####ty marketing team.
Any company should lose sleep when their bottom-line is undercut by losing market share in a demo that they once dominated.

This is a decent analogy if you're looking at the present. But then you have to also consider the previous and next gen consoles. PS2 was a world-beater back in tha day. The problem was that Sony got pretty smug and thought they could make the PS3 succeed by riding on the coat tails of PS2.
They were absolutely wrong. They seemed to ignore the fact that xbox was a viable competitor and basically brushed them aside. Now xbox owns as much of the market here, if not more.
Now looking at this generation, it has taken a full console generation to right their ship, as well as a few missteps from MS for Sony to get a favourable look by the market.
If Apple wants to succeed, they'd better be ready to face their competitor, and not look down on them.

If Apple has the choice between a 35 year old who is ok with buying music and videos through his phone (and spending more for the phone in the first place), vs. an 18 year who will download everything and transfer to his phone, it will pick the latter every single day. If you don't see that as a valid and profitable business plan, I can't help you.

And I can't help you if you don't see that targeting both is smarter period.
