Does it matter to you if it's automatic or quartz?

			I don't think so.
But I see this is your thread - should it matter to me?

I am a watch novice (have had the same Tag since 2001).

Not really, but it might help in terms of pricing. You should be able to get a really nice watch for under $1000 if it is quartz movement. If it's automatic, expect it to exceed $1000 slightly, though there is a possibility to get a chronograph automatic movement for $1000 or under.
If you have no preference. I'd recommend looking at Seiko. They have a good variety of stainless steel bracelet chronographs and divers that are under $1000. If you want something swiss, I would check out Tissot, or Hamilton. You might even find swiss auto movements from the latter two.

This is a "no reason" present.

 Thanks CP!

Check out Christopher Ward online. They have a variety of selection, are affordable and well made. You might find something you like there.

Just an update on what I went with (it was much harder than I thought to stay under $1000).
But in an attempt to add some youth and modern look to my old man, I went with a Nixon 51-30 Chronograph (blue face with brushed steel band).

Not many comments in this thread on this brand, but I really liked the look.

Not super expensive ($400-ish) and Japanese movement. So maybe not the best quality.

My dad has large hands and wrist, so it actually looks very good on him (not like a wall clock - lol).

Thanks for the help guys.

I've had 3 Nixons. While they're more of a fashion watch, I'm a fan. They have a nice look, decent price point, and they've all lasted, even though I've beaten them up pretty good.

Seiko makes some great Auto's for under $500 let alone $1000.

My favorite watch, and current daily is the SRP229. Hacking, and hand winding which is something the cheap autos tended to lack in the past. i got it for $300 on Amazon. Nice size at 44mm heavy, and you wont cry if you bang it up.

I'm assuming there website. But I have no idea. She likes keeping her "guy gift" sites/spots quiet. If I find out I buy what I want, when I want.
