We are also now pleased to reveal the $18 million goals:
Exclusive star system for pre-launch backers. Only players who support the game before its
launch will receive the computer coordinates needed to allow their jump drives to access this system.

Damn. Well that teaches me for procrastinating, now I don't have the free hand laser gun. Not a huge deal, but one less free item that I start with.
Only reason for my delay? I'm relatively sure I will have to upgrade my computer (at least the video card) in order to play this game. Changes the price from $40/60 to potentially hundreds or thousands depending on the size of upgrade needed..
Ah well.. At least the download doesn't expire.. Right?? :-)
BTW, if anyone else is procrastinating like I was, now is the time to jump in. The hanger module will be available for all those that pledge before Thursday morning
Moving forward, Roberts plans to release any and all updates through this first bit of software, slowly expanding the fictional universe he and his team are creating. Updates will come steadily, he said. The first revision will likely add a persistence to the hangars, allowing gamers to play with their ships build-outs using in-shuttle hologram displays and then saving that information. Major updates will hit every two months, micro updates every couple of weeks, Roberts said.

Apparently a lot of people are thinking the same way, they just raised over 100k in the last 24 hours. With the hanger module coming out this week that 17 million goal is going to be a quick one

Only if you pledge on one of the 5 original ships however. I'll be able to caress my 300i's all leather, deluxe interior (in the discount hangar :/), but my Cutlass on it's secret asteroid base is a few months out.
So, I've been procrastinating as well. Looks like the 6 month insurance offer is gone as well?
Send me a PM and I can launder a ship with LTI for you. I'm only a Veteran backer however, so anything over 150$ costs me a bit more than say an Original backer. I've already laundered a couple for CPers.

I think it depends on the package that you choose. For example, the Digital Bounty Hunter package has 4 months of insurance (wonder when it starts... first log in?)
Just to reiterate, anyone who wants Life Time Insurance on a package, here are the prices for me (veteran backer):
Spoiler!
All that you have to do is gift me a package or series of items from your account of equal worth, I liquidate them, buy the package you want, and gift it back.
I can also buy any ship listed on the left bar with LTI, but some of those (ie the Cutlass) are just the ship + LTI + bonus items, not with alpha/beta access.
Just an FYI to anyone still on the fence about pledging for Star Citizen. Currently they still have 34,000 alpha/beta slots up for grabs. That may seem like a lot, but a month ago they had over 44,000 slots open. With the hanger module coming out later today (hopefully), the dogfighting alpha in December, and whatever sales drives they decide to put on in the meantime those slots are likely to disappear fast

I really hope this game is amazing (and actually gets released), but the skeptic in me gets more worried every time they announce some new 'limited-time-only' offer that I should sign up for right away before the deal is gone.
I understand that it is financing the game through its early adopters, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Besides, if the game intends to have any success post-release, it is going to have to offer newcomers added incentive. If the first 100,000 people who signed up get Mega-Death-Stars with replacement insurance, there aren't going to be many people signing up to fly an armorless Regellian trash hauler.

A couple things.
1. Given the release schedule being modularized, I think the vapourware likelihood is very low.
2. The vast majority of current backers have pretty basic ships, like new players will have after launch (Aurora, 300i).
3. There have been 2 promotions since the end of the Kickstarter campaign. One for the Aurora and one for the 300i... basic ships. LTI was given to people who backed the game early, it is no longer available and hasn't been for a couple months.
4. They have severely limited the number of large ships available, and their cost has been very very high.

Pledges are going crazy right now. They hit 16 million 5 days ago. They're already past 16.5 million, that's more than 100k raised per day. This isn't all existing users buying new ships either, the available alpha slots has dropped another 1000 since earlier this morning. Looks like the hanger module press has generated a ton of new interest
